The legalization of same sex marriage has long been a cause celebre of celebrities, so it's not surprising that the stars are already celebrating Wednesday's Supreme Court rulings on two historic marriage equality cases.
The Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which banned federal benefits for same sex couples and declined to rule on Proposition 8, California's voter-approved same-sex marriage ban that has been ruled unconstitutional in lower courts.
Both decisions are being regarded as important steps to legalizing same sex marriage nationwide. Hollywood's biggest stars quickly took to Twitter to show their support:
Some of Hollywood also had some fun celebrating the ruling, like "Lost" creator Damen Lindelof:
I want to french Justice Kennedy SO hard right now.— Damon Lindelof (@DamonLindelof) June 26, 2013
As did Jesse Tyler Feruson, who plays a gay man on ABC's "Modern Family:"
Remember the old days when #DOMA was around and gay people couldn't get married in California? Crazy right!?— Jesse Tyler Ferguson (@jessetyler) June 26, 2013
DOMA-it-just-lost-O Mr. Roboto! So, so happy for Edie, et al.— Neil Patrick Harris (@ActuallyNPH) June 26, 2013
Many celebrity couples have vowed to not get married until it's legal for same sex couples, and Wednesday's rulings made that reality all the more possible, particularly in California. Kristen Bell suggested such intentions in her tweet to Dax Shepard, her longtime boyfriend and the father of her child, after the rulings:
