"Battlestar Galactica" actress Katee Sackhoff says she lost half her followers after they erupted over comments she tweeted about gun safety, the Washington Times reported Monday.

Early Monday she retweeted a CNN story about a 4-year-old Arizona boy fatally shooting his father with the comment, "Please practice gun safety. This is horrible!" What ensued was a heated debate among her followers.

One follower tweeted at her, "Here's a radical idea folks. How about NO gun?" Sackhoff replied, "Never gonna happen in the US. Proper gun safety is a necessity though."

The debate over gun control continued, with someone else tweeting, "why does a civilian need an automatic firearm? Cultural change needed. Too many mass shootings of children murdered."

"Just to be clear...I NEVER said automatic guns should be legal! My goal is to open a respectful intelligent informed dialogue. This is the problem with guns and people...too much passion on all sides to have a discussion that yields results everyone can be content with," Sackhoff responded.

According to Reason, she lost some 100,000 followers over the course of the day.

"On a lighter note since I've lost half my followers due to talking about gun safety...the sun is shining & Happy Monday! Love your neighbor today!" she tweeted.

Some followers did rally around her, one tweeting, "you've lost the crazy people. The logical people stick around and understand what you're saying."

"Well I guess I just learned talking about #GunSafety inspires a massive debate. Pro-Gun or Anti-Gun SAFETY should be unanimous! #OneLove," Sackhoff also tweeted.
