Colorado passes restrictive gun control legislation against backdrop of gun culture and violence.

Sponsors and family members of victims watch as Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper signs control bills into law Wednesday at the Capitol in Denver.

Dougherty stood behind the governor Wednesday as he penned his name onto legislation. She says it is a good first step to preventing future violence, and for her that is a step forward for her state, not a step backward.

"I understand the cultural connection to Colorado, but no one is trying to take away that part of our culture," Dougherty says. "Hunters will be able to get their weapons and have their fun still, but we are talking about public safety."
