Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who was shot point blank in the head in 2011, is the center of a new gun control ad.

The ad is to promote Giffords's new super PAC Americans for Responsible Solutions and highlights the need to enact new laws like universal background checks to curb gun deaths in the country. The advertisement, according to Business Insider, will air in the Washington, D.C. market during President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday.

The ad includes a recent CBS/New York Times poll, which shows 9 out of 10 Americans support universal background checks, the most palatable solution to prevent gun violence, ahead of restricting high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic weapons.

"We have a problem where we shop, where we pray, where our children go to school. But there are solutions we can agree on, even gun owners like us," Giffords says in the ad.

The ad reel includes emotional pictures of vigils following mass killings in Aurora, Colo., Tucson, Ariz., Oak Creek, Wis., and Newtown, Conn.

"Take it from me, Congress must act. Let's get this done," Giffords says appearing with her husband Mark Kelly.
