Attorney General Eric Holder testifies on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, June 12, 2012, before the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing looking into national security leaks.

"There is one issue where Mexico needs your cooperation and that is stopping the flow of assault weapons and other deadly arms across the border," Calderon said during a joint session of Congress. "Believe me, many of these guns are not going to Americans; instead dozens are ending up in the hands of criminals."

But gun law expert and author Alan Korwin says Democrats' cries for stronger gun laws in the wake of the Fast and Furious controversy are misguided.

"The justice system and law enforcement are really what are lacking in crime control," Korwin said.

Korwin says laws to prosecute straw buyers and laws to keep criminals from buying guns already exist, but just need to be better enforced.

"There are tons of gun laws," Korwin says. "What law would you even ask for?"
