Another day, another report of a horrifying cannibalistic attack. Alexander Kinyua, a 21-year-old Maryland man was arrested Wednesday for killing and eating the brain and heart of his roommate.
Kinyua had been scheduled for a June 19 appearance in Baltimore District Court on charges of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment, stemming from an separate incident that occurred May 19. He was released on bond three days after being detained.
The alleged killer admitted to chopping up his roommate with a knife and eating his heart and part of his brain in Joppa, Md., about 17 miles northeast of Baltimore. According to arresting documents, police found two metal tins containing a human head and hands in the basement of Kinyua's home.
The remains are believed to be those of Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie, a Ghanian immigrant who had been living with Kinyua for about six months and was reported missing last week.
According to the documents, Kinyua's brother discovered the remains and his father reported the find to police.
During a police interrogation, Kinyua told police "he had caused the death of Mr. Kodie by cutting him up with a knife. Mr. Kinyua further reported that after causing the death he had ingested Mr. Kodie's heart and portions of his brain."
Kinyua then reportedly dumped the remainder of Kodie's body in a nearby church dumpster.
The attack is the second reported cannibalistic attack in the U.S. this week. Late Saturday, a naked man believed to be high on bath salts was found eating the face of a homeless man in Miami.
According to Major Doug Verzi of the Investigative Service Bureau, there was nothing to suggest that the Maryland killing was drug-related. The investigation is ongoing.
Kinyua is charged with first degree murder and two counts of assault. According to Monica Worrell, public information officer with Harford County Sherriff's Office, police hadn't been called to Kinyua's residence since Kodie moved in.
