Former U.S. Sen. and presidential candidate John Edwards arrives at federal court in Greensboro, N.C.
The prosecution is expected to conclude its case today against former presidential candidate John Edwards in a Greensboro, N.C., courtroom, with a key adviser and fundraiser expected to testify that Edwards sought a position in the Obama cabinet despite the controversy surrounding his extramarital affair.
Edwards is on trial for allegedly directing almost $1 million in campaign contributions to Rielle Hunter, his once mistress and mother of his daughter, Frances Quinn Hunter.[See a slide show of famous political sex scandals.]
The prosecution alleges Edwards failed to report donations he received and violated campaign finance laws. If found guilty, Edwards faces a possible 30 years in prison.
Leo Hindery, Edwards's senior economic policy adviser and fundraiser, is expected to be one of the prosecution's final witnesses. Hindery could shed light on how deep Edwards's political ambitions ran. ABC News reports that Hindery will discuss how John Edwards aggressively pursued a place in Obama's cabinet even after his daughter was born.
Hunter has not taken the stand against her former lover Edwards.
The case has featured emotional testimonies from former Edwards staff members. Wednesday Jennifer Palmieri, Edwards's former spokeswoman, testified about the ex-senator's coverup of the affair as well as the pain he caused his wife, Elizabeth Edwards, who died of cancer in 2010.
