"We're not necessarily representative, but we're not supposed to be, either," says Hagle. Indeed, every state has its own particular demographic quirks and special interests, which caucus and primary results will necessarily reflect. In addition, while Iowa has outsized influence with its first nomination contest, that influence is also amplified exponentially by the media circus that goes along with it—media attention that in large part comes from outside the state.
