One of the ways to overcome this imbalance is to encourage more domestic undergraduate engineering and science students to stay in school to complete MS or PhD degrees. That is the quickest way to close this gap and to edcucate more US citizens. We simply do not do a good job of doing that! We tell US high school students to go to college, but we don't do a goog job telling our undergraduates to seek graduate degrees!

I know because I am in higher education trying to encourage our undergraduates to go to graduate school. Many of them don't even know that they do not have to pay for the PhD!

It is the money. Why study engineering if your income potential stagnates immediately and you have little opportunity for advancement in a company. I am a US born engineer and of all my brothers and sisters and their spouses- I have by far the lowest income. I would never suggest to anyone to study engineering. It is just not well compensated or respected in this country.
