WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican U.S. presidential candidate Herman Cain is not the type of person who would sexually harass women, his wife Gloria Cain said in excerpts of a Fox News Channel interview released Sunday.

Cain's wife of 43 years has remained largely hidden from public view as her husband seeks the party's nomination to run against President Barack Obama in 2012. She addressed the sexual harassment allegations that have roiled her husband's campaign in a rare interview. [Cain bungles scandal management 101.]

"To hear such graphic allegations and know that that would have been something that was totally disrespectful of her as a woman and I know that's not the person he is. He totally respects women,'' Gloria Cain said in an interview to be aired Monday on the program ``On the Record with Greta Van Susteren.''

Four women have made allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior by Cain, including two who settled harassment claims while he was the head of the National Restaurant Association. [Check out a slide show of GOP spouses on the 2012 campaign trail.]

Cain, a former business executive who has never held public office, has denied the sexual harassment accusations.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll last Thursday and Friday found Cain, with 20 percent support, was second to former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, who polled 28 percent, among Republican voters in the race for the party's presidential nomination.

Gloria Cain, in a "wife to the rescue" mission, to save a hubby allegedly hunting for other women to supplement her bedroom role! She is probably a victim of marital infidelity too, but, like Gary Heart's wife who came to Heart's defense in the middle of a nasty divorce when his escapades with Donna Rice surfaced, Mrs. Cain feels the burden to stand by her tainted rascal. Forget the "battered wives syndrome;" There is a "semi-abandoned wives syndrome" that probably dwarfs the aforesaid category. The latter curse and tongue-lash their little rascals at home, but they strive to keep their misery and their family dysfunction out of the public eye - especially when the TV cameras are around. Mr. Herman Cain's dirty laundry, however, is already hanging out, and Mrs. Cain's effort to wash it out comes a little too late!

I expect Mr. Cain's decline in the polls to continue, as I expect his campaign to suffer a slow political death along the campaign trail. But he is still in denial as he desperately struggles in the ropes of the Republican political ring to avoid an early knock-out! Nikos Retsos, retired professor
