In Debate, GOP Hopefuls Blame Government for Economic Mess

HANOVER, New Hampshire (Reuters) - Republican presidential contenders blamed the federal government on Tuesday for the struggling economy and harshly criticized Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke during the early stages of a 2012 debate.

Several of the Republicans seeking the nomination to unseat President Barack Obama in 2012 said government policies had led to the economic slowdown and refused to place blame on Wall Street or corporations.

"I think if you look at the problem with the economic meltdown, you can trace it right back to the federal government," Representative Michele Bachmann said in a debate at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

"It was the federal government that demanded that banks and mortgage companies lower platinum level lending standards to new lows," she said. "It was the federal government that pushed the subprime loans."

Former U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich said politicians were to blame for the economy and pointed the finger at Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner.

"The first person to fire is Bernanke, who is a disastrous chairman of the Federal Reserve. The second person to fire is Geithner," he said.

"The fact is, in both the Bush and the Obama administrations, the fix has been in and I think it's perfectly reasonable for people to be angry," he said. "But let's be clear who put the fix in: The fix was put in by the federal government."

The debate, the seventh in the Republican race for the White House, was focused on economic issues.

The candidates also took shots at Obama for his role in the sagging economy.

"Three years ago we selected a person who'd never had any leadership experience, never worked in the private sector, never had the opportunity to actually bring people together, and he hasn't been able to do so," former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney said.

"He said he'd bring us hope and change. Instead he's divided the nation and tried to blame other people," he said.

[Vote now: Will Obama be a one-term president?]

Romney, whose 2008 White House bid failed, has retaken the lead in polls over Texas Governor Rick Perry but has still not won over conservatives who remember his past support in Massachusetts for abortion rights and a healthcare mandate.

Romney's campaign got a big boost on Tuesday when New Jersey Republican Governor Chris Christie, who is popular within the party, endorsed his candidacy.

The debate in New Hampshire comes three months before the first voting in the Republican race.

Perry was under pressure in the debate after a string of poor performances cost him his front-runner role.

DON’T GIVE UP ON GREEN ENERGY.

The state of Illinois is in the pursuit of Green energy and its resources for the long haul. That’s the true look at the time line in what’s involved with this new technological pursuit. No one in the know assumes this pursuit to be quick and easy. Yet, Illinois is committed and as a result solar panels, wind farms, geothermal units, are beginning to dot the Midwestern landscape. The state has already formed the Illinois Green Economy Network which is involving each of the state’s 48 community colleges the third largest educational group in the nation.

As a former national political candidate I remain positive on Green, it takes years. Yet, I realize that the time horizon and R & D efforts may take 15 – 20 years, but the effort is worth the wait. The IGEN approach in Illinois is a simple one that’s working it involves;

Green campuses

Green communities

Green curriculum

Green workforce development

Approximately two thirds of the students at Illinois Community Colleges enroll in certificate programs that help them acquire specialized workforce skills and training. Some of the many institutional accomplishments to date include;

Southeastern CC, in Harrisburg has a state biofuels program,

Lakeland College in Mattoon reduced its annual energy cost by $100,000 , created geothermal well field,

College of Lake County reduced energy bill 5%, occupancy sensor replacement,

Moraine Valley CC, Palos Hills, reduced power usage 2%

Southwestern Illinois College, constructed wind turbine and installed solar panels,

All the Colleges have made real headway in going Green. As Kermit reminded us with his song, IT’S NOT EASY BEING GREEN, but it sure will pay off with new jobs and cost savings. Politicians must not give up the green pursuit. I hear little emphasis in going green in presidential debates.

BUSINESS EXPERIENCE AND GOOD AMERICA’S PRESIDENCIES—THE MYTH.

Herman Cain's 999 idea is very foolish, simplistic, regressive even reactionary. It will continue the massive transfer of wealth to the already wealthy and make the poor and middle class much poorer. Cain will soon, however, overstay his welcome, as Republicans will never make him their nominee. His indication that he would make either Paul Ryan or Jim DeMint his running mate (if indeed he is nominated?) is Sarah Palin de javu all over again. Bring it on, Cain!

And about Romney?

WHO KNOWS what and when Romney's next "evolution" will be? May be after the elections he will make another volte face. The man is a hopeless face changer and system-gamer we don’t know what he really believes in. He will never be the President of the United states! Period.

Americans cannot be fooled as this man prepares to have taxpayer complete his mansion expansion in California. That is how the man is. Don't you think that if he wants to spend his own money, he could have started doing the expansion work now even while he campaigns. All he has to do is make a plan and get a contractor to carry it out. Instead, he floats an idea, and expects taxpayers to later pick up the tab if he wins the Presidency.

Finally, these two men are yet to be confronted with their bogus, untruthful claim that business people make good Presidents. Herbert Hoover (engineer businessman) took the US to the Great Depression. Calvin Coolidge (not a businessman, though his father was) before him succeeded. Compare the Presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt (business experience) and FDR (no business experience, though he had a polio rehab center later)? Warren G. Harding, with all his experience was disappointing. More recently, remember Cheney and George W. cf. Bill Clinton (Clinton created tons of jobs; Bush and Cheney drove the economy into the cliff and brought the global economy to near collapse)? Jimmy Carter (businessman) did not quite succeed. Clearly, it is a myth that former business people make good Presidents! That will be made clearer as the election progresses. Romney himself was failed one term Governor who raised taxes, could create jobs, just as he did when he was in business--he killed jobs. He lies like no one else and even the one achievement he made (the Massachusetts health care reform, he now denies just to win the Republican nomination for president). That too will come to greater light!!! For sure!

The, Romney still has to deal with his Mormon problem—and the votes of Christian conservatives and other problems, including the fact that he wants to return to the failed Bush policies that destroyed the country. Finally, Romney is the best friend that Wall Street can buy—he would have to answer to the “Occupy Wall Street” movement.
