Republican Sen. John McCain met with rebel forces in Libya Friday and applauded the opposition’s efforts. In the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, McCain called members of the opposition “heroes.” McCain, the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, has been a strong supporter of the U.S. military intervention in Libya, having urged the United States to get involved in Libya even before the UN security council called for it. But he has been critical of the United States’s withdrawal of combat aircraft and the decision to hand control over to the NATO. McCain’s visit comes as President Obama authorized the use of armed Predator drones against Qadhafi’s forces, intended to help improve attacks on the ground.
