Of course the crime rate is up. When you take away jobs , and increase the price of everything, people will do whatever is necessary to survive. Congrats on the republican wins in the last election, thanks for screwing us over !

This is a very shallow, arguably unfair, analysis. One problem is that it doesn't compare apples and oranges. For example, Cleveland is a relatively small portion of Greater Cleveland, with an estimated 2010 population of only about 400,000. Columbus, Ohio, with a geographical area 2 1/2 times that of Cleveland and a population almost twice as large, includes suburban and even rural areas and its population represents a much larger percentage of its metropolitan area.
Columbus and even Los Angeles and New York City may not be on this list because they are mega-cities, that have a higher proportion of safe neighborhoods offsetting troubled neighborhoods.
E.g., would Minneapolis have been on this list if greater Minneapolis & St. Paul (they are twin cities) were included?
Why doesn't U.S. News & World Report prepare statistics for metropolitan areas, which actually would be more meaningful if the goal was to compare apples with apples?

I can tell you Orlando's crime rate has gone up overall in the last 6-7 years. I noticed a huge spike in violent crimes after Katrina - we hit our highest murder rate ever - I think their criminals moved to our area and Houston because both cities have had a spike in violent crime since late 2004. And now we have more gang activity and bold daytime crimes. Don't get me wrong because like most cities we have both crime-ridden and relatively peaceful areas... our tourist areas are typically quiet - but the crime-ridden areas are GROWING and infiltrating what used to be nice areas of town. Our police forces are doing all they can but some of the criminals are organized and well armed - many regular people have gotten fed up and have gotten a CWP, and I am reading more and more stories of an everyday citizen shooting a bad guy during a crime.
I miss the old days in this area, when it was not scary to be out and about in most areas after dark.

If you believe crime is down, I have a bridge to sell you.
If you have any contact in reporting crime to police, you know that they fake a classification given very bogus parameters.
It is all a phony reclassification of crime.
Every PD does this, and especially the feds.

I think everyone needs to stand back and look at the state of
our country. The good ole days are over...And people have to learn to be fruggle! Examples are as such, family planning measures, stop spending so much. At my house there is a communal garden and we all take part in the work. When summer comes we pick berries and can or put up produce in the deep freeze.
I have relatives that lives abroad... who has observed that Europe has combined social programs with work programs and it works..laziness should not be tolerated
or greed! The only way our economy will escape this
downward spiral is if everyone will work together and stop fighting!

Did anyone notice Minneapolis on the list? That's just bogus.

Unfortunately crime comes in many forms in this great country of ours. I have lived or traveled to several major cities, rural counties, even mountain towns. These crime statistics focus primarily on the inter cities who's inhabitants are in many cities, predominantly people of color. Over the years, I have observed crimes committed outside of the major cities that simply don't make the headlines. No one wants to live in crime infested communities, regardless of skin color. I have observed serious crimes perpetuated by Methamphetamine dealers and users in the hills of West Virginia (all white criminal and users), I have personally observed crime in all of the middle to upper middle class suburban communities I have lived in and we all (those of us old enough) remember the high crime rates in Russia, Ireland, and other, predominately white countries. The crime are not committed because they were white, these people (criminal behavior is never acceptable), are among the poorest, lest educated in the community. We (as a human people) must get away from excusing crimes that are committed by one group of people versus another. This kind of race ignorance is causing the demise of an entire nation. I am a true conservative and I am appalled by the suggestion that race/skin color, has anything to do with who the criminals are. I voted for Richard Nixon, do you think I am proud of that decision? Think deep, get your fact straight, then be quiet.

Once I saw the city names, I immediately saw the correlation for the cities I am familiar with...
I'm going to write up something on my personal blog about this and I'll be COUNTING on being called a racist and a bigoted "conservative" by the PC crowd (they're so easy) because of the "long time democrat" and high % of blacks (or hispanics, in Miami's case) angle on a number of these.
It's gonna be fun.

Bernie Madoff is not African American. How do you explain the heinous crime he perpetrated?
The fact that a city has a majority african american population does not equate race with criminality. The fact that a crime ridden city has a large african american populatoin does not mean that the criminals are african american. The fact that cities with high crime rates and high african american populations does not mean the criminals receive public assistance.

When people are encouraged to reproduce with incentives like free schooling, free lunches, tax breaks, welfare, food stamps, free housing, it isn't surprising that neglected and abused children are born every day in this country and they grow up to become criminals. It leads to more crime, more overpopulation, more pollution, and higher taxes. There is one very simple solution to this problem and that is to require parents to pay for their children. Having a child is a choice, and it is an expensive one.............well it really should be an expensive one but like I said the government makes it too easy for idiots to reproduce - they actually encourage it with all the freebies and incentives they hand out.
