US cities all had public transit systems for decades, then had them dismantled by those who wanted us all to switch to cars.
It's easy, often a good value, and a relief to have if something happens to your car, and a great thing if you live near the lines. I used this for years in Europe, and didn't need a car the whole time I was there. Bad weather? - no problem. High gas prices? no problem. Heavy traffic? no problem.
They also used the public transportation for school kids over the age of 10 at big discounted fares, so those with kids paid for bus service (more fair) and BIG savings also on school busses and gas, maint etc for them.
I hope more mayors and more cities set up good systems. Portland Oregon also MAKES the streetcars, so that also fosters growth of newer companies in this field.
