John McCain Calls Study on Gays in Military Flawed

WASHINGTON — Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain says a new Pentagon study on gays serving openly in the military is flawed and shouldn't be used to leverage a reversal of the "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

McCain's statement, given Thursday at a Senate hearing, puts him at odds with Adm. Mike Mullen, the military's top uniformed officer. Mullen was expected to tell McCain and others on the Senate Armed Services Committee that "war does not stifle change" but rather "demands it." McCain said he still has concerns about objections among some combat troops to repealing the policy. He also criticized the study for looking only at how the law could be repealed, instead of whether doing so would benefit the military.

The only thing currently satisfying about Sen McCains behavior now was the lauditory speech about Sen Russ Feingolds service. Other than that he has become a complete hypocrit.

McCain needs to retire himself and his alter ego, the maverick. I'm willing to bet that there were plenty of gay men who served with him in the military - he just didn't know about them. I imagine that gay men and women who serve our country probably feel like African Americans felt when they were denied entry into the military service, and when they were accepted they were housed in separate quarters and made to feel they were different. Different doesn't mean something bad. We need to accept that our differences are what make us unique. Just because someone is gay doesn't mean he/she is going to fall in love with a fellow mate and adversely affect military operations. Gay men and women don't affect patient care in hospital settings or business settings so why are so many people afraid to have them in the military.
