The economy has yet to hit rock bottom.

At least that's what two in three Americans think, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

That percentage is much higher than the 53% who felt similarly at the beginning of the year.

In addition, nearly six in 10 Americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction.

The bleak outlook could affect the upcoming midterm elections, where the entire House of Representatives and one-third of the 100 Senate seats are up for grabs. [See a slide show of hot races to watch this November.]

According to the poll, 72% of respondents disapprove of the job Congress is doing, which does not bode well for Democratic and Republican incumbents.

The number viewing the Republican Party favorably is at an all-time low. Only 24% expressed positive feelings about the GOP. The Democratic Party did not fare much better at 33%.

The Republicans must gain 39 seats in the House and 10 in the Senate if they are to win majorities in both chambers.

The poll surveyed more than 1,000 adults leading up to this week's primary elections in four states. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.10 percentage points.

"I think it's a JetBlue' election. Everyone is frustrated," Democratic pollster Peter Hart told The Wall Street Journal, referring to the airline employee who called it quits this week after a heated argument with a passenger.

Hart conducted the poll with Republican pollster Bill McInturff.

"They're all taking the emergency exit," Hart added.
