Senate Close To Restoring Jobless Benefits

WASHINGTON — More than 2 million workers who have been laid off for long stretches could get their unemployment benefits restored as early as next week.

The Senate plans to take up a measure Tuesday to restore the extended benefits, right after a new Democratic senator from West Virginia is sworn in, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday. [See which organizations donate the most to Reid's campaign.]

With the death of Sen. Robert Byrd, Senate Democrats had been a vote short of the 60 needed to overcome a GOP filibuster. West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has said he could name a temporary replacement to fill Byrd's seat as early as Friday.

The House already has passed a bill to extend the benefits through November, at a cost of about $34 billion. The money would be borrowed, adding to the national debt.

About 2.5 million people have lost their benefits since the last extension ran out at the end of May. The bill would add up to 73 weeks of extra benefits, paid for by the federal government, on top of the 26 weeks typically provided by states.

Reid, D-Nev., said Byrd's replacement will be sworn in Tuesday afternoon, and a bill to extend the jobless benefits will be up for a vote immediately afterward.

Lawmakers have been sparring for weeks over extending the benefits. Some Democrats have argued that lawmakers have a moral obligation to extend the benefits while the unemployment rate hovers above 9 percent. Many Democrats also see the benefits as insurance against the economy sliding back into recession because laid off workers typically spend their payments quickly, stimulating the economy.

Republicans, tapping into voter anger about the growing national debt, said they would support extending the benefits if the bill was paid for. They have proposed using unspent money from President Barack Obama's massive 2009 economic recovery package, a plan Democrats oppose.

Awh unemployment....DONT FORGET THE REAL RESON YOU GET TO DRAW!!!!!! THEY SHIPPED ALL OUR JOBS OUT OF COUNTRY....and no one can find a job because there are not enough here anymore. I am not drawing unemployment or have a job. I had to leave my job due to a health issue in June of 2009 but have worked since I was 16. My husband draws and we are hanging by threads trying to keep our home. The sad part is that I read just a few weeks ago on yahoo that if you dont have a job already and you are applying for one to not even bother because the employer will not hire you. Know What kinda of Crap is that. How can people find jobs if the employers are not going to hire you anyhow. Thats a postive attitude for people trying hard to find a job. And as far as the Goverment Why bother because it hasnt changed anything yet..we have all been screaming the same thing for the last few years, they dont work for us, they are stealing us broke, and they still have a damn job..

I have worked since I was 15, sometimes 2 jobs and have always paid my bills and debts and have had a good credit score. After being laid off at Christmas on a "temporary" layoff I find my comany going under like so many others today. We voted for these jerks that are keeping our benefits away from us, I think we all need to take a minute to vote them out in the next election. If they had any compassion for We the people, they would be doing a lot more than taking leisure vacations over the 4th while good hardworking people are losing their homes and are unable to provide for their famlies. If they wanted to make some sacrifice they should all give up their salaries for a year for the people that do the physical labor that makes this country actually Run. Trust me I do plan on voting in every election from this point on! I don't believe its just one person that we can blame its several crooked politicians that rely on people that trust us to keep them in office. We need to overhaul our government to be what it was originally meant to be... for We the people. We all have voices and their job is to listen to us and act for the good of the U.S. as a whole. I would be willing to start over and work at McDonalds for 7 dollars an hour if all these fat cat politicians would do the same to build us back to the nation we all want and need it to be.

Its about time they get moving on something that matters for we the people, while the members of the senate were taking vacation over the 4th, we who depend on those benefits and are without were packing for when we get kicked out on the street at the end of the month.

We have nothing, there are no jobs for us to refuse the way the Attorney General says lazy unemployed people do, and we are losing what little we have while our senators vacation. I am so disappointed in my own senators, usually they have a good head on their shoulders, but just seems they have their heads quite a bit lower. Help the people and it will help the economy. Create real jobs, not just temp jobs like census, and there would be more taxes paid to lower the deficit. Seems like a pretty simple equation, don't you think?
