JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri's two leading U.S. Senate candidates are the owners of some valuable property.
Federal financial disclosure documents show that Republican U.S. Rep. Roy Blunt has assets ranging from $1.5 million to nearly $6.4 million.
But Blunt's campaign said Monday that the actual value is between $2 million and $3 million. Most of that value is from a piece of property in Washington, D.C. — worth about $1.6 million — that is listed as belonging to a trust under his wife's name. The Blunts are trying to sell the property, his campaign said. [See who is giving money to Blunt's campaign.]
Documents filed by Democratic Secretary of State Robin Carnahan show assets ranging from about $500,000 to about $1.2 million. Her assets include a family farm near Rolla and two airplanes.
The figures are not precise because federal forms ask only whether assets fall into broad ranges, such as $50,000 to $100,000, or $1 million to $5 million.
The Blunt and Carnahan campaigns provided copies of their reports to The Associated Press.
Blunt and Carnahan are their parties' front-runners in the race to replace Republican Kit Bond, who is retiring after 24 years in the Senate. Missouri's primary elections are Aug. 3.
