1 Judd Alan Gregg was born on Valentine's Day, Feb.14, 1947, in Nashua, N.H. When Gregg was 5 years old, his father, a Republican, was elected New Hampshire governor.
2 Gregg graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1965. He attended Columbia University, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1969. He attended law school at Boston University, earning a J.D. in 1972 and an LL.M. in tax law in 1975.
3 He ran for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 and served there until 1989, when he became governor of New Hampshire. He served two two-year terms as governor.
4 He was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1992. In 2004, he received more votes than any Senate candidate in New Hampshire history.
5 Gregg has split with his party on social issues. He voted against a proposed federal ban on gay marriage, and he supports embryonic stem cell research.
6 President George W. Bush appointed Gregg's wife, Kathleen MacLellan Gregg, to the board of directors of the Student Loan Marketing Association in 2001.
7 Gregg was a coauthor of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 with the late Sen. Ted Kennedy.
8 President Obama chose Gregg to become Commerce secretary in 2009, but Gregg withdrew his nomination, citing "irresolvable conflicts" with the president's policies.
9 He and his wife have three children and reside in Rye Beach, N.H.
10 He announced he will not run for re-election in November.
