'The first time the bears came in 1998, I almost stepped on a plastic 'bag of medical waste with a bloody hypodermic needle sticking out.'

Whats that all about? had the bears been shooting up meth before they came in to steal your food?

PETA increased the price of fruit & other food when the ban-poison law was & is enforced. I used to have enough fruit from my orchard so it was a big budget item. gave gifts of fresh or frozen fruit, jams or jellies. Bears are very dangerous. One of them got into my garage one night. The next day, I opened the small door & almost fell into piles of broken glass left by a bear when it smashed things from the pantry. My big freezer had lots of valuable food in it. The door had a strong magnetic lock, The bear left dirty marks all over it, trying to pry it open. The first time the bears came in 1998, I almost stepped on a plastic bag of medical waste with a bloody hypodermic needle sticking out. i was in sandals. I could have contracted AIDS or whatever someone threw away down the street. Fish & Game people told me the only way I could get relief was to GET THE LAW CHANGED. I became disabled and had to leave my home to a babysitter while i seek treatment. Fish & Game uselessly pays people to put monitor radios on bears "to track where they go.'' We food producers know exactly where they go. If pest animals of any kind are causing you loss, do contact Calif. Fish & Game. I did all I can and still miss my lovely harvests.

In l998, PETA won passage of an initiative they began. Until the new law was enforced, we got full value of taxes we paid California state veterinarians who knew poisoning pest animals is the best way to solve the problem. The new law made it a crime to poison animals. i created a home orchard East of Los Angeles, with figs, peaches, citrus, apricots, grapes, pomegranates, pear apples, plums, vegetables & berries. In July 1998, bears began raiding my orchard & continue to do it every year. They tear down branches, eat ripe fruit & the rest withers. They destroy years of pruning to get bearing twigs. The orchard cost a lot in topsoil, fertilizer, insect control, costly timed water system & path lights. Bears tore up everything. I lost thousands of dollars of delicious fruit that turned to bear fat. All over the state, people who produce food from orchards, field crops and small animals are losing money. Electrifying one small yard is costly. Fish & Game people brought culvert traps and repeatedly trapped &* released the same bears. They can't release them into National forests. I was told I could shoot bears on my property. A professional hunter said he could do it for $500 per bear. Thanks a lot, PETA folks. See next panel for more facts, please.

Not only is Pamela Anderson probably taking some medication for her Hep C that was developed using animals, I am sure she also enjoyed anesthesia and analgesia developed from animal research while she was getting her implants. Sorry Pam, but if you are really against animal research, you will have to give up anesthesia, pain killers, blood transfusions, antibiotics and reconstructive surgery, all of which were developed using animals.

This is a great example of how celebrities are misinformed or doing things just for publicity. Unfortunately, they creat misinformation. They have PR agents sign them up for campaigns that they do not understand. We all are for animal welfare, but animal research is essential towards improving human and health as well as animal health. Ms.Anderson befits from the drugs tested on chimpanzees. Just chekc the medical literature. Chimps are responsible for the Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B vaccines. They are the only animal model for HCV and all of the treatments for HCV have been screened using chimps. So, which is it? Is Pam Anderson just misinformed or really a hypocrit trying to misinform the public???

I wonder how she is being treated now? Weren't all of those drugs developed using animals? I am sure that did not come up. There are currently no cell based models for doing this research that are accepted by the FDA. Because they don't work. If they did work, researchers would use them and not Chimps. It would be faster, cheaper, easier on every level than using animals. And tons of researchers spend everyday looking for these alternatives. But they do not currently exist. So while everyone would love to have them or one of the great "Computer Models" PETA types talk about, currently medical progress involves animals.

Maybe if PETA or Pam put up some of the money they spent on tanning and posters to actually fund research, maybe they would actually help move twoard their goal instead of wasting time and money holding back research from accomplishing things.

In my opinion if there is any hope for any drug or group of drugs that might help people like me who suffer from this disease, give us the opportunity to try them out, our lives slowly become unbearable as it is. YEAH for Pam Anderson, it was a pleasure watching her dance, as I am a ballroom dancer, though less now as I get sicker. This is one horrific illness and we need help yesterday. I wish I had the power to push the possibility of drugs forward. So many people have died and are dying every day from this disease, we have nothing to lose by choosing to try what is available. Thanks Pam!!

Sheila Kramer of FL 6:23PM May 14, 2010

Pam Anderson is right. We need to invest in research that will actually produce effective vaccines and medicines. People with hepatitis C, HIV/AIDS, and many other diseases have been waiting WAY too long for effective cures. And some chimpanzees have been waiting for DECADES in cramped cages. Many have never seen the light of day. Can you imagine that?

kristin h. of DC 5:13PM May 14, 2010

I'm so glad individuals and organizations are working together to protect animals and to advance human health. We've long known that experiments on chimpanzees do not produce useful data. That's why most researchers have stopped using these incredible animals in experiments. Did you know it would actually save taxpayer dollars to release chimpanzees from labs to sanctuaries? These dollars could then be invested in modern nonanimal research!
