MONTPELIER, Vt. — A Rutland businessman is planning to launch a bid to seek the Republican nomination to run for Vermont's lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Republican John M. Mitchell is planning to announce his effort Thursday in Montpelier.

At least two other Republicans have already announced they would seek the GOP nomination to run against Democratic incumbent Rep. Peter Welch, who is planning to seek his third, two-year term.

Mitchell is the retired CEO of the company now known as OMYA, Inc. and he is a longtime member of the board of directors of Associated Industries of Vermont.

I appreciate John Mitchell's articulate manner but found his silence in March 2006, around the AP's firing of Chris Graff, Vermont's longtime AP Bureau Chief, especially disturbing. Peter Freyne, now deceased, lives through his writings and provides a sprited analysis of the situation. The link: http://www.7dvt.com/2006/protest-grows-over-chris-graffs-firing.

It would behoove Vermonters to listen carefully to Mr. Mitchell's words. Erudite, eloquent, and wise, he will guide your state towards a more productive and secure future.
