FARMINGTON, N.M. — Northwest New Mexico is expected to be well represented on the House Committee on Natural Resources.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Ben Ray Lujan has been appointed to a committee that has oversight on land and water issues, ranging from fisheries and wildlife to minerals and mining interests.

New Mexico Rural Water Association national director Jim Dunlap said Lujan can help the state protect its share of San Juan River water through the committee.

The committee's jurisdiction also includes the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Lujan represents the Navajo Nation, Jicarilla Apache Nation and 15 Pueblo tribes.

A Lujan spokesman said the Congressman stepped down from the Committee on Homeland Security because rules prevent him from serving on more than two committees.

He is just doing the family business. Got the position and now has to keep it, as his father does in the state.

I guess Rep Lujan will only address the issues in northern NM, and not southern NM. I sent Rep Lujan an email once, as I did to all NM Congressmen and Senators, and his response was that since my zipcode was not in his district, he would not be responding to my email. That struck me as odd, since I thought he should be representing the State of New Mexico, no matter the zipcode. I will say that everyone else responded to my emails.
