Someone needs to research and write about the biographies collected from across the U.S. in OUTSTANDING YOUNG WOMEN OF AMERICA (U.S.) beginning in the 1960's and do some follow-up of the women listed.

Also, in the 1960's and 1970's there were hundreds of women's centers in the U.S., free-standing and attached to colleges and universities, and an organization which was created in Cincinnati OH, Seattle WA and NYC which was named the National Association of Women's Centers. It existed for several years in the early 1980's and then seemed to vanish. I was one of the principal organizers. A group of women who worked with battered women's shelters was a "division" (in many senses of the word).

I joined NOW when it began. I subscribed to Far Right Catholic Schafley's "Eagle Forum." its "Insider" newsletter said if the ERA became law, churches that don't ordain women would lose their religious tax exemption. She called herself "The Sweetheart of the Moral Majority." Catholic Richard Viguerie & another Catholic man formed Moral Majority, Inc. It persuaded non-Catholic churches to join the ecumenical movement ahd endorse acts that aid the Vatican. Many did demand that our civil government must enforce church laws that ban abortion and suicide. Those laws exist to protect church income. Each conception has potential to live and become a believer who tithes. If aborted, it has no dollar vale to a church and, of course, corpses don't tithe. Phyllis succeeded. ERA failed. So to this day we do not have equal pay for equal work. Women are stlll paid less than men. When mothers are poor & unwed, they often get welfare. Thanks a lot, Phyllis. The Catholic church keeps its illegal tax exemptions & vouchers and all tax exempt churches fail to pay their fair share of what it costs to run the USA. The exemptions prove government illegally HELPS religion. We need a massive successful push for the ERA.

while the Equal Rights Amendment was passed by Congress in 1972 -- IT HAS NEVER BEEN RATIFIED BY THE STATES!!

the Amendment would affirm that women and men have equal rights under the law -- and every year it is reintroduced but is still not part of the US Constitution

ILLINOIS IS ONE OF THOSE STATES . . . Nevada is another

"Measure banning sex bias goes to state Senate" by Christi Parsons Chicago Tribune May 22, 2003

which begs the question if then state senator Obama voted PRESENT?

"ERA supporters hope issue comes up to vote in Illinois" by Doug Wilson Senior Writer, Quincy Herald-Whig April 6, 2004

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A former state lawmaker said the federal Equal Rights Amendment may come up for a vote in Illinois this year if a few more senators agree to support the measure {perhaps he was too busy campaigning for US Senator back then!}

unfortunately America hasn't come such a long way since the 60s afterall . . .
