Certain pro-gun Americans still preach a fear of a total gun ban, even AFTER both the Supreme Court's Heller and Mcdonald decisions.

I suppose that since the Supreme Court has already prohibited the federal government from imposing a total gun ban in it's 2008 Heller decision, that means there are no longer anyone who favors using the federal government to impose a total ban on private firearms.

If I am going to commit a crime, I sure as hell am not going to use a weapon that is registered to me. The fact is that if someone is going to commit a crime, they are not going to care if guns are illegal because they are already commiting a more serious crime. All it means to them is that no one will interfere because no one else is strapped. The police can't be everywhere at once and for anyone to say that we do not have the right to protect ourselves is a fool. I do believe however that persons who have never been trained to operate a weapon i.e. non military, law enforcement, ect. should be required to take a training course on that type of weapon which they intend to own. Weapons are only tools. If you don't know how to use them, accidents can and do happen. The politicians of this city has infringed the rights of its people for far too long. I hope this ban gets cut down.

I know it is hard to understand, but the 2nd Ammendment was put there to help people protect themselves and protect themselves from the Government. As history has proven time and time again, if the people cannot protect themselves the Government can do what they want. With people who can protect themselves the Government has to think twice. You cannot wait for the Police to protect you. Court Cases have proved time and time again that Police are not responsible for your protection, they cannot be sued for not protecting you and your family.
I do feel bad when kids get killed from weapons of anytype, but banning those weapons will not do anything. Poeple throughout history have used anything and everything to kill one another. I mean do we ban hammers because a wife or husband used it to kill each other. NO. In the case of criminals they do not care what the laws say, they do what they want without any worries.
The constitution is not a living document. It is a document that is set in stone. The founding fathers new a lot more about our country and its people than we give credit for. They thought long and hard about what needs to go into this document and how it would effect us. Without it we would not have the country we have or the almost free life that we have.

. . .that since the U.S. Supreme Court in 2008 (the DC v. Heller ruling) already prohibited the federal government from imposing a total ban on private gun ownership and use, that means there are no longer anyone who favors using the federal government to impose a total, complete nationwide ban on private firearms. The soon-to-be-expected ruling in Mcdonald v. Chicago means that the ban on a total gun ban will be reinforced by extending the Heller ruling to state and local authorities.
Moreover, the Democrats will benefit politically in future elections since the NRA and the Republicans can no longer accuse them of wanting to impose a total gun ban.

Jessica,
You are espousing what all other ignorant people do when the subject of citizens being able to protect themselves comes up. You create fantastic, imaginary scenarios that will never come to bear. You think that lifting the handgun ban will mean people on this city's south side will then go and get guns? Have you heard of background checks? Have you BEEN to the south side recently? You know how many gun deaths there are right now with some of the country's strictest gun laws in place?
In states with even concealed carry laws, law-abiding gun owners are NOT the ones committing gun crimes. Those using illegal weapons and who have malice toward others are the ones committing the violence.
I occasionally have to go to the south side and never feel safe, even in daylight. I have been trained with a variety of weapons and will happily go through any level of background checks, training and such to be able to have a gun. It's my absolute right.
Jimof IL3:00PM March 23, 2010
To make sure that only responsible law abiding citizens should be allowed to own hand guns, credit records and character background should be checked, and should undergo firearm seminar training, pass state test on firearm safety, and attend firearm safety continuing education, say every 5 years.

Why would ANYONE want handguns in the city of Chicago? I feel unsafe as it is-- but with half of the south side legally packing?! That's absurd. Fast forward to more dead teenagers, gang violence, and a bunch of idiots toting hand guns. The ignorance of rootin' tootin' gun huggers amazes me. Right to bear arms?! We are also allowed to OWN black people according to our founding fathers. Get relevant: Allowing hand guns in the city will be a catastrophe.

I am 80 years old and I still have the rifle I received at Christmas when I was 10 years old. My father and my mother taught me to shoot and how to clean my gun. When I was 15 years old I worked to earn money with which I purchased my own shotgun. I still have both guns. They are clean and well cared for. When I was young I used both guns for hunting wild game to supplement the food we ate. I also sold some dressed game at the local farmers market.
When I entered the army in 1950 for the war in Korea I had no problem learning quickly how to shoot and care for the various weapons we needed to use in fighting the enemy. In fact, I quickly became one of the trainers for those recruits who lacked the background I was fortunate to have.
Even today I still shoot regularly at a local range and I hunt for game every season.
The 2nd Amendment is our bulwark against tyrants both domestic and foreign.

THIS ARGUMENT IN CHICAGO IS VACUOUS AT BEST AND INTELLECTUALLY DISHONEST AT THE LEAST.
THE FOUNDERS DID NOT SIMPLY TOSS A BUNCH OF IDEAS TOGETHER AND LIST THEM RANDOMLY AS ONE THROUGH TEN. THEY WERE VERY METHODICAL AND DELIBERATE IN PIECING TOGETHER THE TOOL KIT THAT FORMS THE CONTRACT, THE PROMISE BETWEEN EACH AND EVERY AMERICAN CITIZEN THAT BINDS US ALL TOGETHER TO MAKE US "WE THE PEOPLE".
THE 2ND AMENDMENT WAS PUT IN ITS' PLACE IN THE TOOL KIT BY THE FOUNDERS FOR A VERY SPECIFIC REASON! THE FOUNDERS KNEW THAT WHAT THEY WERE CREATING WAS A UNIQUE DOCUMENT LIKE THE WORLD HAD NEVER BEFORE SEEN. THEY ALSO KNEW THE WEAKNESSES OF MEN HUNGRY FOR POWER AND WEALTH..THEY WERE LIVING UNDER IT AND HAD ALL OF THEIR LIVES. THEY KNEW THAT FREEDOM IS NOT FREE AND THAT THERE IS BUT ONE CURRENCY ACCEPTED IN RETURN FOR LIBERTY AND THAT IS THE BLOOD OF PATRIOTS AND THAT OF TYRANTS.
WHEN TYRANNY LOOMS ON THE HORIZON YOU USE TOOL KIT ITEM # 1 TALK FIRST TO YOUR NEIGHBORS AND ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES, PETITION FOR REDRESS OF THE ACTUAL WRONGS OR THE PERCEIVED WRONGS.YOU OR YOUR NEIGHBORS PRAY FOR GUIDANCE WHILE WORKING THROUGH THE TURMOIL.
YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS DON'T HAVE TO BACK DOWN ON YOUR DEMANDS THAT THE CONSTITUTION BE FOLLOWED BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOOL KIT ITEM # 2 THAT WAS PUT THERE SPECIFICALLY TO PROTECT TOOL KIT ITEM # 1 AND ALL THE REST OF THE TOOLS THAT ENSURE OUR INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY!
THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 80 MILLION REGISTERED GUNS AND PROBABLY 40% MORE THAT HAVE BEEN HANDED DOWN OVER THE YEARS THAT ARE STILL HIGHLY FUNCTIONAL IN THE RIGHT HANDS. THERE IS NO ARMY IN THE WORLD THAT CAN MOBILIZE AGAINST THAT MANY MODERN DAY "PITCH FORKS"...YOU KNOW, THE ONES THAT BELCH FIRE AND REACH OUT SOMEWHAT FURTHER THAN ARMS LENGTH?
IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE ARE CURRENTLY APPROXIMATELY 30,000 GUN LAWS ON THE BOOKS THROUGHOUT THE FEDERAL AND THE SEVERAL STATE GOVTS. WHAT A WASTE OF MAN HOURS, BRAIN CELLS, AND TAX MONEY!
