Yep, that unfortunate employee messed up! But, as a retired federal officer who spent many, many years screening international passengers at a major airport, I still side with the TSA. DHS was a terrible, kneejerk Congressional reaction to the horror of 9/11, which most of the country has forgotten. The TSA was hastily cobbled together, with no effective bargaining rights, which might have helped recruiting better employees. IMO, as human as they are, they're STILL far better than the "square badge" private guards hired cheaply by the airlines. But my main comment is reserved for the Port Authority of NY/NJ. This anachronistic fiefdom is long overdue for extinction. It is an independent, closed bureauocracy that combines arrogance with stupidity. All international airports MUST by controlled by DHS, the Port Authority should stick to parking tickets and licensing food courts.

Well, good gracious! We lucked out again. (This assumes we located the intruder.)These seemingly unrelated aviation security incidents may just be probes of our capabilities. (It really pains me to use that word.) How long will passengers be expected to roll the dice before TSA gets serious and hires competent employees and first-line supervisors? Anyone else notice how many accidents (planes and trains crashing) have been caused by employees on cell phones during the past 12 months? Hey, here's a novel suggestion: employees involved in a public safety job are prohibited from using any cell phone while working.
