Congress Considers Cutting D.C. School Voucher Program

I'm an atheist who has paid income taxes since l942. As I bought homes & rentals, I paid property taxes as a landlord. So I've paid lots of taxes. I have been forced to pay higher taxes every time church property & income escaped fair taxation. People like me support fire, police & all other public services while churches enjoy their benefits & fail to pay their share. Our taxes illegally advance religion by chaplains who are paid & retired at highest officer wages. Congress opens sessions with tax-subsidized prayer, using public property & the time of tax-paid lawmakers. In our king-free republic, they pray to a nonexistent king, asking him to tell them how to vote. Vouchers are a sneaky way to dig into public treasuries. The situation subverts public education. Vouchers are used by church schools to arouse hatred of atheists. Vouchers were widely used to hasten white flight from minority areas during civil rights battles. It's historic fact that public schools were one of the most important agencies that gave us a universal language of English and national standards, making the USA a world leader. Vouchers aid religion. All of them must be canceled and none issued again.

I feel that school vouchers are a good thing because it means competition. But the playing field for the competition must be level. The same is true in industry and commerce. If a potential competitor gets an unfair advantage then the other party will be not be able to compete. Example, If the charter school can turn away a mediocre student and the public school must teach him because it is mandated then the public school is operating at a disadvantage. All children must receive a a good education, but not all students have the same abilities, so they all need an environment and motivation to do the very best of their ability. Class size, tools for learning, type of language used at home, discipline, positive parental involvement etc. all contribute to the complexities of the teaching environment. Even a teachers preconceived opinion of a student, or the students opinion of a teacher can have a very positive or negative outcome on the student's performance. If the teachers, students and parents work together to improve the attitude and performance of the student scholastically and the tools for learning are there, then I say let the competition begin, and the student will reap the rewards.
