Congress Fights Obesity With Healthcare Bills

Both the House and Senate bills mandate calorie counts at fast-food restaurants

In 2018, more than half the adults in Oklahoma, Mississippi, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, and South Dakota could be obese. That's just one of many alarming projections in a study released last week by Kenneth Thorpe, chair of Emory University's Department of Health Policy and Management, and it comes, appropriately, as Congress is grappling with how to best reform a healthcare system that is becoming wildly and unsustainably expensive.

By Thorpe's calculations, within a decade, nearly 1 of every 5 dollars spent on healthcare in the United States will be attributable to obesity-related conditions, including diabetes and high blood pressure. "It's certainly a wake-up call," Thorpe says. "To see you've got six states within 10 years of the majority of the adult population being considered obese—that's a pretty remarkable statistic."

He added, "I think there is a growing recognition that a key driver of rising healthcare costs is the explosion of chronic diseases linked to rising rates of obesity." According to his study, if obesity rates were kept constant, the country could save $200 billion a year by 2018.

But how much attention is Congress paying to obesity's cost in the health bills it is debating? "I think they are moving in the right direction," Thorpe says. "The question is, Is it aggressive and fast enough?"

For the most part, the Democrats' healthcare reform legislation focuses on insurance coverage and insurance reforms. But experts say there are proposals on the table that at least begin to address the obesity problem. In one of the more far-reaching approaches, both the House bill, which passed earlier this month, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's bill, released last week, would require fast-food chains and many restaurants to put calorie labels on their menus and displays. It's a concept that's been tried out on a smaller scale with some success, most notably in New York City. According to a study released last month by the city's health department, customers who saw the labels at places like McDonald's and Starbucks consumed 106 fewer calories than people who didn't see the signs.

The menu labels are "an important first step toward educating the public on calories," says Joe Thompson, the surgeon general of Arkansas and director of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Center to Prevent Childhood Obesity. "Most people don't know how many calories they are consuming when they order something off a menu."

Reid's bill also sets aside $25 million for projects aimed at curbing childhood obesity, while the House plan has a pilot program that would award grants to communities for public-health campaigns. And both would give incentives to doctors to spend more time helping patients make healthy lifestyle choices. But many of these programs are still small or poorly funded.

One place where Democrats clearly took a pass was a proposal to impose a federal tax on sodas and sugary drinks. About a dozen states have adopted such taxes, and in poll after poll this summer, voters ranked the soda tax as one of their favorite options for financing healthcare reform. But the tax was vigorously opposed by the powerful beverage lobby, which said that it would adversely affect poor people and would not change consumer behavior. And so it disappeared.

PART 1;Todays Health Care Programs is a complete failure because of the concepts of heroin made pills under a Health Care Concept and the FDA reported around 100,000 Americans dead. Now this Heroin has brought the United States into a War over drugs. “Post 9/11”...

Lets just say all of this is true, and supported with News Reports by ABC News, CBS News, NBC News, and Official FBI investigations. I did note after 9/11 that the failures of of Home Banking Financing, And the cost of these failures was at the cost to Tax Payers. The crash of the Stock Market at $980 Billion dollars in one day disappeared and I do not remember the firm that lost the most invested dollars, but I think it was the AARP.

At any rate this takes me right back to the 2 different attacks against the World Trade Center. Why this one Building ? Over a year ago I asked , why is there a hands off policy that prevents the destruction of the poppy fields. One year later I was still asking why ? I had no idea that Heroin was being sold in the USA as health care pills, for pain..... My whole concept with my Boycott Of The Arabic Drug Empire, went south and north and to what is now called the source. The Purdue Pharmaceutical Company, so please note this..

The Purdue Pharmaceutical Company, invested Billions of dollars into different companies through different sources, in order to cover the billions per month earned from selling heroin addiction. This is called a paper trail. These, hundreds of investments were done to launder this money in case of a addiction epidemic takes place in the United States. Now I am willing to bet, a name, a company name through this paper trail will lead to other insider trading and making money from the death of the People on 9/11.

A lot of people handle this information carefully because they fear a link to Organizes Crime Figures in America. I assure you this, I am after one company that failed these Crime Figures, I am after the poppy fields and to end this Damn War Based on a lie, in part, of why we are at War. These Organized Crime Figures, from the Streets to the Families, do not want any part of this because it is a insult to the whole world of Man, and this Attack was a statement to pin point, of being betrayed within a deal made to sell Heroin.

3/23/2010: When I first started to build this web site to help President Obama I had no idea it would become the largest site in the United States. In order for you to understand, I like President Obama , and I will jump into any blog that speaks bad of him in a moral issue," This will not be tolerated by me." I even helped get him into office, But FASC Concepts is to reach out to President Obama and have him stand with the people and to be as one with us again. To remove this force pay and merge the views of 250 million people within this Bill to law. To build the most powerful Health Care Health Reform Stimulus Package ever thought of by me. But I have protested this Bill because of its lacks of moral value, against the People. Is There A Constitutional Infringement of a Moral Value for Health Care vs. The People

Part 1: 3/22/2010: { recapped for short input}

I had to wait for this Bill to be passed in order to show the Republican Party, GOP and FRC Action that it is the voice of the people that guides the destiny of this Country. I guess you could say I needed them to get out of the way so that the last Comic Standing will be FASC Concepts and we do not need the peoples money to assist the needs of the Peoples Rights.

As predicted , the first stages of the Health Care Bill was passed. Why, you ask ? It is because people wish to be seen for their in put of a view and not unite. What is lost is respect with in a concept of { Freedom Of Choice } to be a part of this system or not, with in this Health Care Force Pay Matrix.

What is offered by FASC Concepts is the Freedom Of Choice to President Obama, because we feel it is unconstitutional to force pay into the failures of Health Care Insurance Companies and then Tax that money. Even the insurance compainies plan to file suit. As you can see our elected officials are paying little attention to the public. As I reach out to my computer and I knock , knock, knock on the screen, and I say is there any body out there?

Health Care within a moral value, is to , {GIVE LIFE TO HOPE WHERE THERE IS NONE}

We have a lot of work to do. The Standard American Diet consists of processed foods and fast foods that are low in nutritional content. Our bodies crave nutrition and when we have poor diets, we end up craving more food and overeating. This is one piece of the obesity puzzle that can be solved by increasing whole organic foods in our diets. Americans are so used to convenience and the instant gratification attitude. People rarely cook their own food at home. When you are in control of what goes into your food you the calorie content goes down and the nutritional content goes up. Since Americans are unfamiliar with eating a diet made up of whole foods, they need support. Health Counselors provide support to people who want to make lifestyle changes but really don't know how to go about it. Many people go on diets and lose weight but do not make lifestyle changes to support this weight loss long term. Health Counselors help people set goals, achieve them, and maintain long term weight loss and over all better health long term. They provide affordable guidance and support and give people the tools to take personal responsibility for their own health.
