You are surrounded by good people...and funny too. On the one hand there's The Office crowd from Scranton, and on the other Specter just gave the Dems a filibuster proof Senate. Good day for the left.

"Most political debates degrade to arguments over choice and school prayer instead of sticking to the key issues effecting the economy and national security. The social issues tend to separate us while the substantive governing matters take a back seat."
This hasn't been my experience in "real life," i.e. in face-to-face conversations, and that's what I was talking about. The media--particularly online--is a different story; it seems to invite the lunatic fringe and promote Jerry Springer Show-style rhetoric. At least that's how I picture most of the people behind the anonymous internet handles. Politicians seem to have embraced this style as well.
All I'm saying is that when it comes down to it there are nuts on either extreme, who tend to be particularly vocal, as well as blowhard politicians eager to cater to them. But my experience has been that the majority of Americans will make considered decisions based on the best information they can gather. Who knows...maybe I just live and work with unusually good, well-mannered people.

Todd, I tend to disagree on whether or not this nation is polarized. I believe it is. Most political debates degrade to arguments over choice and school prayer instead of sticking to the key issues effecting the economy and national security. The social issues tend to separate us while the substantive governing matters take a back seat. I also believe the extreme right tends to fan the flames of divisiveness more than the left does. I've oftened wondered what their ultimate objectives are other than preparing us for Armageddon. Shouldn't that be left to the Church anyway ?

"TeamSarah will dub you a "hater" now; and you're likely to lose a lot of friends. Nonetheless, your candor is to be admired"
Most of my Republican friends agree with me. I hate to sound elitist, but I attribute it to the fact that they tend to be well-educated professionals who by necessity have learned to view the world objectively. I also think they're good Americans, who put country ahead of party. Don't buy into the "polarization of America" garbage; I think it's demeaning. Most people in this country are smart enough not to buy a party's line--not to mention its candidates--hook line and sinker.
The day "TeamSarah" runs the show, we're screwed. We need to raise our standards.

If you're a Democrat, there is reason to celebrate Sara Palin's so called "popularity".
She represents the very attributes that brought the GOP down.... Fundamentalism, short-sightedness, reluctance to embrace meaningful change, not entirely dumb-but not so bright. Between the good folksy ya-all hockey mom, and Rush Limbaugh, the Democratic party should be in good standing with the American People for a very long time. Please support them both.
