Just the use the word "subcontinent" shows an attitude of superiority and ignorance. How about referring to the continent as a "developing" continent for lack of a better word. Reading about the extermination of the indigenous people of the Americas, would inform most of us of the historical truth.

russians go out from Siberia because Siberia is territory that was populated by local aborigenes. What's happened with all these aborugenes? Right, big part of them is drunkmens. What Chavez say to president of Russia?

Ok, I read this -- so what does it "do for us"?

Is this another one of those -- America is BAD becase "Europeans" arrived in the New World 500 years ago?

This is yet another example of media hysteria over nothing.

What ever happend to important and unbiased news reporting.

Oh, and just out of curiosity -- what is the #1 best selling book on Amaxon at the same time?

The book all leaders need to read and public too

is DAVID STANNARD's AMERICAN HOLOCAUST The Conquest of the New World.

An essential read.

For sure Galeano's book is not 100% hystorical, mainly because very few documents have been found from spanish acts on america before XVII century. Nobody wanted to write so vile and genocide events.

However, to think that Europeans arrival in 1492 had not negatives effects on South America development denotes a huge ignorance on latin-american history. The extermination of natives in this region is one of the most terribles (and hidden) chapters on the history of the world, being by far worst than Nazi's holocaust or africans slavery. This is neither a half baked fact nor a myth. I recommend to study, witness reports by Father Bartolome De las Casas. He was spanish, so he didn't intend to "blame Europeans" but report facts.

The book is just a compilation of half baked facts and myths from the Latin Ameican Left. As Vargas Llosa put it, it became the Bible of the Latin American idiot who constantly blames on the Europeans their own incapacity to develop that wonderful subcontinent.
