I aagree "its a loss for the country", but, fortunatly, that country is Saudi Arabia.

It is shameful that anyone in our government who says anything against the israeli atrocities against the palestinian people is silenced and branded "anti-semitic''. Don't they know arabs are semites too? Regarding Isreal , it appears the oppressed have become the opressors. It is a sorry chapter (and one that has continued far too long) that anyone in Washington who doesn't tow the israeli line gets branded a traitor and does not get the job! Mr. Freeman seem eminently qualified to have the job. It is humanities loss that it seems he will not get it.

It's a sad day that a man who presents a realistic appraisal of the Israeli's persacution of the palestinians is silenced. It is time that the U.S. stopped rubber stamping every rotten armed incursion into Palestine. It seems as if Israael leaened too many lessons from their former Nazi opressors and are now attempting a final soloution to the Palistinians

Not to worry. Freeman has a job waiting at Amnesty International.

I think he was an awful choice and I am glad he will not be in the post. However, there is no evidence that AIPAC lobbied against him. If you take the time to go and look at the CSPAN questioning that Blair got, it was readily apparent that the choice of Freeman was a mistake due to his clear biases on policy. He would have been unable to conduct objective analysis. When it became clear that the Senators (R and D) were not going to just allow this guy to roll in and start implementing his agenda behind the scenes, he withdrew and blamed AIPAC for attacking him. Disgusting coward. Thank God he will not have a hand in our nation's affairs.

Lisa of NY 7:55AM March 11, 2009

It's seems quite likely, given that Freeman was already under investigation for potentially illegal financial ties to China and Saudi Arabia, that he stepped down not because of AIPAC, but because he doesn't want the skeletons in his own closet to come out. It's frankly embarrassing so many commentators here throw around accusations of sinister Jewish influence without a shred of evidence but ignore the obvious explanations.

we've had enough of aipac controlling our foreign affairs. when abramoff was found to have contributed to sniper school training of illegal occupants in the palesinian territories of the west bank, we should have closed down all israeli charities just as they did with muslim charities. it is time to regain political freedom from corruption and hand out justice equally.

I think a few radical among us end up making all of us seem like the predatory people we mostly are not.

It is sad that Freeman stepped aside. Eerything I have read about him seems to indicate a sharp guy who should present the situation as is.

Settelments in Israel have hindered peace and the US gov't knows it but pussyfoots around saying so.

Not all jews agree with this type of policy.

StevenH of CA 1:22AM March 11, 2009

Obviously AIPAC is still in control in Washington. What a shame!! Many of the America's wars in recent years have been proxy wars on behalf of the state of Israel. How long will it take the US public opinion to realize that its foreign policy in the Mid-East is primarily dictated by a faction of israeli extremists rather than American intersets. How long will it take to realize that the crimes in Darfur pale next to the crimes against humanity perpetrated in Gaza nd Jerusalem against the palestinians. Doesn't the indictment of the ex-Israeli President for rape and PM Olmert's indictment for corruption give us a clue about the depravity of the rulers of this apartheid state.

Mohamed Mahmoud 11:38PM March 10, 2009

We've already got enough muslim apologists in our government. Don't need any more.
