There are a lot of rank and file Democrats who agree with Begich on gun control and oil drilling. I am a pro-labor liberal on economic issues but don't agree with a hard-line environmentalist view on drilling and definitely support gun rights. Support for gun control is a losing issue for Democrats in most of the country. Democrats should ignore the anti-gun lobby and the radical environmentalists. Energy independence which means not only developing alternative energy sources but also expanding nuclear power and tapping our own domestic oil supply. Begich sounds like a common sense kind of Democrat.

This is among the most shameless puff pieces I've ever seen in U.S. News and World Report and it states major premises and facts absolutely wrong. Begich didn't "take the high road" in his campaign, he ran any number of attack commercials going after Stevens for the trial (which is now looking like it was rigged) and even after the conviction only managed to win by about 1%. And wow, that's some sweet conservative cred, trimming the stimulus package - which has been working beautifully by the way - to a mere $787 Billion! Most informed predictions say Begich will vote how Obama tells him to about 90% of the time, so please cease insulting the reader's intelligence by implying he's a Dem in name only. Finally, thank you for attributing the Native Claims Settlement Act to Begich's father and leaving out Stevens, who actually wrote it and actually got it passed the Senate, where the constitution make it actually challenging to pass a bill. But Mark is going to learn that soon enough.
