Internships for Elders

To Diane Kern of FL

Diane,

Recently I tried removing my MPA degree from my resume and I did get an interview.

- How do you know that this did the trick for you?

I was interviewed by three people who looked to be about 30 years of age. I have interviewed and hired many people in my experience. They had no clue how to interview a potential employee. My interview lasted about 20 minutes.

- Why such a short interview? Why did YOU let it end? In what way did YOU try to fit what they were looking for? How did YOU show you were up to date, "hip" & current?

It was probably the shortest interview that I have ever been on. I feel that I have so much to offer an employer.

- Then convey that fact & move forward.

Unemployment - Ft Myers Fla

Dear Accountant:

It is well-known that Florida is so short on work that (I'm told) hundreds of people show up to interview for low jobs. My daughter lives in Alva and managed to get a state job, but it is far beneath her talents.

So don't be discouraged. You are not alone. It does not sound as if you are getting counseling, so look around for some. The YWCA probably still offers classes (very cheap) on examining your resume and how to present yourself. When I was there, I helped displaced homemakers--the ones who were left behind when their husbands of 25 years ran off with other women.

Even if you end up in a class with some of those ladies, let me tell you, they are tough. They want to prove they can stand on their own two feet. You can learn a lot from them.

Meantime, OK, so you are an accountant. What else can you do? Col. Kentucky Fried Chicken and Grandma Moses started brand-new careers well after they were 65.
