Age discrimation is alive and well.

I here everyone saying well it's just the uneducated that do not have work. Well, I have a Masters Degree in Computer Science, Undergraduate Degree's in Business, Mathematics and Computer Science, 30 years of work experience in some of the leading edge telecommunications companies and still I can't find work. I also have a certification as a teacher of Mathematics. I'm 60 and need to work to support myself. I've been looking for any type of computer job and have no job offers, I've resorted to applying to even the lowest level jobs (secretary, store clerk), just to find some work. I have to assume it's due to age discrimination that no one will hire me as I'm more qualified than most out there looking. I've applied to all the government websites, the teachers web sites, to universities, to retail stores. Granted we are in an economic decline, and jobs are scarce, but please don't keep telling people it's their education that's the problem. It's more than that. You would think some company or government agency would think that hiring seasoned qualified older workers would bring a wealth of experience to their work force. Something is definately wrong with what is happening here.

Just a little FYI

Hi from Ontario. I'm a pushing 50 woman who elected to have 6 children and I returned to school (University) and my degree will be completed in June/10. I think the teaching profession is oversubscribed, certainly in my area (Peterborough). Seems as though half the hopefuls in my school aspire to teach. Very few people are excellent teachers and sadly, I think many are in it for the paycheck. I had considered this an option until I viewed firsthand Board policy and regulations and frankly, blatant hypocracy practiced by our local 'Catholic' board. These employees make astronomical figures. I daresay I don't see a third of them at Church. I wish I knew where to invest my energies. I, like many of you have accumulated a wealth of practical experience (as well as my degree) Unfortunately, we live in a society that prides a degree as more important in determining ones effectiveness as an excellent employee. Just my thoughts.

Is teacher right for everyone?

I'm a 42 year old certified special education teacher for the past 15 years. I love what I do for a living. Yes, mature indivduals have the maturity, committment, organizational skills and professionalism that many young folks lack. There are many middle-age unemployed individuals that are well suited for a teaching career. However, I am concered that teaching is being advertised as a paycheck. That, it is not. Teaching is a highly stressful, 24 hour challenge. It is both a science and an art. You can be an expert on a subject; Does that mean you can teach it? "It's all about the students learning."

The education field is in dire need of teachers but I have seen many individuals go back to school during a tough time in their lives only to find out it wasn't what they thought.

Please inform yourselves before taking such a huge plunge!

H-E-L-P!!!

I'm 57, a public school teacher with an M.Ed degree and almost 20 years of teaching experience in FL. I would like to leave South Florida for the east coast of the state. I hear Brevard county takes pride in hiring seniors and received an honor from AARP for this. Can anyone offer any suggestions about any school systems in the aformentioned area who may be hiring?

OVER 55 WORKERS

Most seniors over 55 make the best employeees, in my view. I think a greater effort to hire them especially in the field of Education will pay huge dividends. They tend to be mature, professional, organized, take pride in their work and usually give 100%. America is blessed to have perhaps the greatest percentage of over 55 workers in the world who fall into these categories.

Older workers

I think older workers are the thing of the future, because they are profitable, they take pride in their work,they are dependable and they don't mind going the extra mile to get the job done right. CEO's need to look at the older worker, they are out there, and they are marketable.

Mercy Medical Center Hires older workers

Theresa and christine, you are not alone! Somehow, many corporations feel that when they want to downsize, they want to be stupid. And those stupid CEOs ought to be locked up for a long, long time for age discrimination. Now St. John's Mercy Medical Center is one place that looks more at how much talent you have and doesn't give a hoot about your age. Move to St. Louis, Missouri and St. John's Mercy would love to have you. Housekeeping is tired of the young people as floor techs due to the cussing, improper break time/lunch time management, improper operation of the equipment, etc. We want to start a whole new set of floor techs with the age ranging from 48 thru 99. Care Center/Central Transportation does have older workers, but they want MORE!! More older workers. Also, the Radiology Department and other departments of the hospital want some older workers as well. The Valet Parking department count use some more workers over the age of 50. Anybody who does choose to age discriminate at the hospital gets in trouble with security.

I am 48 years old and only 2 years away from turning 50. Here at St. John's Mercy Medical Center, we at times like to attract those over the age of 55 and up. Such as floor techs, nurses, doctors, food service in all departments, etc. In fact they appreciate the work done by people over the age of 50. Linen can use some, patient transport has some over 50 but wanst some more. St. John's Mercy can be at times a breeding ground for hirng people over the age of 50. Also, car washes such as Waterway here in St. Louis could use some over the age of 50 as well. They are always hiring. Since the hospital also contracts out to Accord Building Services in Bridgeton, they too could use some over the age of 50. I have a funny feeling that some of the companies that lay off workers or fire them because of age seem to have money in their pockets but at least maybe that money in their pockets will have to be used in paying millions of dollars in fines for when the CEOs of corporatinos get tickets for age discrimination.

where to go on limited income in this world?

I am sixty year old lost my job want to possibly locate in

the south near beach. Would like advise as best places for

persons like myself looking for affordable lifestyle. Would

be interested in warm climate near water community with like

age group. I presently live in New York NY but it's gotten

hard to keep up the costs. Thanks
