Aging in place communities have formed to help older adults reside safely in their homes as long as possible. Here's a list of pioneering communities and other resources:

Avenidas Village's 340 members help one another (all 50 and over) with home repairs, rides, and social interaction in Palo Alto, Calif.

Beacon Hill Village in Boston is the prototype for many aging-in-place communities.

Capitol Hill Village in Washington, D.C., distinguishes itself by being completely staffed by volunteers and having no age requirements.

The Center for Aging in Place Support facilitates the development of aging-in-place communities in Westchester County, N.Y., and maintains a list of existing communities throughout the country.

Community Without Walls in Princeton, N.J., offers low fees and mainly social interaction.

Sunset Neighborhood offers a-la-carte and package deals to seniors in New Hartford, N.Y., who are looking for assistance with transportation, home maintenance, and personal care.
