Athens/Catskill, New York

Just across the Hudson River from Columbia County, Greene County is a gem waiting to be discovered. I have a vacation house in a privately owned lake community in Athens, NY. It is a delightful area -- all of the history of the Hudson Valley at a fraction of the prices of Columbia or Ulster Counties. There's boating in the Hudson, scenic vistas of the nearby Catskill, Taconic and Berkshire Mountains, small town charm, and Amtrak trains to NYC just 10 miles away in quaint and epicureanly delightful Hudson, NY. Colleges and culture abound less than 35 minutes away (Bard, Hudson-Greene CC, SUNY Albany, HVCC, RPI, St. Rose, Sage, SUNY New Paltz). City life in manageable Albany, with all of its cultural and civic activities and plethora of shopping venues is within a half hours drive. As an alternative, try Kingston, just 30 minutes in teh other way. All in all, a nice mix of country and convenience.

Retire in Las Cruces, New Mexico

We used to live in Green Valley, but it has many disadvantages. Although the paper refuses to tell about it, ther is crime. It's too hot to stay there during the summer. The Tucson pollution has risen up to that level. The drug people operate through there. You have to go to Tucson for most medical services. We were happy to leave.

On the other hand, Las Cruces has excellent hospitals and doctors. We have a very comfortable climate with three seasons; Spring, Summer and Fall. It snows about once every ten years, melting off in a couple of hours so you don't have any use for a snow shovel. There is very little pollution, especially in the higher east side. There are few things to be allergic to. Traffic is not heavy. New Mexico State University and Dona Ana Community College as well as the local senir centers provide plenty of opportunity for retires. New Mexico State University leads the nation in sponsored engineering research. White Sands Proving Station and the Western Spaceport are nearby.

The cost of living is low. Housing costs are lower than they are in most places. State income taxes are very reasonable with most retires over 65 paying none. The people are extremely friendly. There are plently of activities all year.

Best place to retire

Puerto Rico is one of the best places to live in the country. Buying a home is cheaper than most any state, the climate is excellent without insects that plague places like Florida. Utilities are much cheaper (as is gasoline). The people are kindly, and racism is almost totally absent. There are also few places in the world more beautiful, and the scenery changes rapidly from place to place. It has some of the oldest settled places in America that are well preserved.

Taxes are low, and you pay no real estate taxes on the home that you live in.

Roads are mostly in excellent condition, and cities and villages have great charm.

Also, there is no animosity toward stateside people (Anglos) easily found in places like Hawaii.

Puerto Rico is a great place, and next to Denmark has the greatest personal satisfaction with life.

Fort Worth Metro

Suburubs west of Fort Worth provide warm weather, no state income tax, easy proximity to the world's 4 largest airport,

much more reasonable Real Estate especially compared to California ,New York or the East Coast. The suburbs to the west of Fort Worth provide wide open spaces, yet access to both Dallas and Fort Worth takes less than an hour away with great medical services and the shopping of a big area like The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
