Will Beer Be the Next Casualty of the Crisis?

Cheap Beer Doesn't Often Qualify As Beer...

"$5 a bottle for a craft beer or a six pack of Schlitz?"

I'd go for the $8.99 sixer of craft beer. If I am faced with only having enough money for something I find barely qualifies as beer I'll just wait. I'm not going to drink Schlitz, or anything like it, ever. I'll just drink less of something more affordable like Spaten Optimator, Anchor Porter or Sierra Nevada's offerings. Every time I don't buy that $5 sixer of something I find unpalatable I am halfway to a $10 sixer of something that is palatable.

craft beer or Schlitz?

More and more people are economizing every cent they spend. Craft beers, art auctions, high end restaurants and $1000 bottles of wine are being ignored and cheaper alternatives are embraced. $5 a bottle for a craft beer or a six pack of Schlitz?

If you lost your job and your house whoich would you be buying?

Nope, bar's had a brisk business

I work at a local bar as their webmaster and doorman. We've had capacity crowds and then some consitently.

Beer is usually far cheaper than mixed drinks, too. $7.50 a pitcher containing 4 glasses: $1.88 a glass. Individual pints: $2.50, and bottles are $2.75 to $3. Mixed drinks go for singles at $4.50, $9-$12 for doubles and speacialty shots.

Just remember, all... We want you to come back. Have a designated helmsman (it's a Pirate Bar, after all...) We'll be hapy to call you a taxi, too.

What about "Gin"

Have a feeling "Victory Gin" will be the alcohol of choice in the coming years

Go Local

Texas beers are my favorites--Shiner, LoneStar, Real Ale, St. Arnold's, and Live Oak! Support your local breweries!

Do your duty

You heard it! Now do your duty as an American. Buy and drink excellent microbrewed beer! Go now, don't delay. BUY MORE BEER! You're a traitor to your country if you don't.

Friends don't let friends drink Bud Light

I do not drink cheap beer under any circumstances. I drink only imports and craft brews. If prices continue to rise I will simply drink less or brew my own.

As for how to resolve drunk driving -- we should raise the driving age to 21 and make it very difficult and expensive to obtain a drivers license. The drinking age should be 18 for all alcohol. It is ridiculous to have adults who can vote, marry, buy property and die in the military who are not allowed to decide whether to drink alcohol or not.

Quality vs Quantity

The reason that "craft brews" have grown at the expense of the Buds and Millers is simple: they taste so much better. In fact, they taste...the mass brews are watered down tasteless industrial products, and the only reason to drink them is a cheap drunk. But I'd rather drink one bottle of Blue Heron or IPA than three bottles of factory-made yellow water. Even in a depression. Heck, the mass brews give me a depression.

I'm sort of a "Joe Six Pack" and good beer is one of my few luxuries. I spend about $7.00 - $9.00 on a six pack of beer. I consume a twelve pack a week. If were unemployed I wouldn't buy beer yes, but I won't buy the cheap stuff (Pabst, Bud, Shlitz etc) as long as I am employed (down economy or not).
