How the Long-Term Unemployed Can Find Work

Expanding the network. Any career expert can tell you that networking is critical to finding a job, so, older workers would seem to have an advantage on their younger peers through the rich networks they've built over the course of their careers. But job seekers ages 45 and older actually represented a larger percentage of the long-term unemployed than of the total unemployed in 2003, the Labor Department found.

Often, workers who are out of work for long periods are challenged by social networks in which many of their contacts are also out of work, says Mark Granovetter, a Stanford University sociologist. That may be particularly true in this recession, which has been characterized by downturns in specific sectors—such as residential construction and auto manufacturing. There is some promising anecdotal evidence, however, that employers are using online social networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook effectively, to help make connections with potential employees, Granovetter says. Time spent making online connections could help job seekers circumvent the challenge of an unpromising offline network.

Diversity by any other name =Discrimination .

I am nearing my 64th birthday. I have over 36 years of continuous employment in the insurance industry. I have missed a total of 7 sick days in that time. I was downsized in August 2008. What I see now at the end of the on line application process smacks of ageism and raceism. Diversity has gone too far. Since from my resume' the prospective employer can tell I am white and over 60 I am effectively eliminated from the active applicant list. This is because of federally mandated hiring quotas for non whites. This has been going on since I got out of the service when the black power movement was really strong. At that time many unqualified people were hired. Now they have entire diversity departments mostly headed by blacks,to make sure the quota is maintained. Just take a look around you when you apply for any federal or state job you'll be luck to see a white face in the whole cluster. Good luck if you are white ,welcome to BHussein's utopia.

Trying to be Patient

I have been out of work since March 2008 and I have try to find work it's been a tiresome trip but I stay hopeful and faithful I lean on God and my Jesus to help me though this time. I am bless and thankful I have a husband who is so supportive. I feel everyone pain and we just have to remain strong and keep the faith. I feel what Bea is saying about jobs that want you to have all this experience I have just receive my Associates degree last year I want to be a paralegal but I don't have no work experience how am I suppose to gain experience if these firms won't give me a chance and then they want you to get a Bachelors degree you can't win for losing. But like I said before I will keep on trucking and I will survive. =0) God bless everyone.
