The 30 Best Careers for 2009

Nursing- full of variety

The one outstanding thing about nursing is the variety of different types of work that can be done with the same degree. As a nurse you'll never be bored. Working in the operating room is totally different than working in the emergency room or ICU or maternity or pediatrics or... Well, you get the picture. And the great thing is that you don't have to go back to school to get a new degree to "change jobs." After a few years of working in a coronary care unit or med-surg, you can transfer to an outpatient clinic or work in a Dr.'s office or work for Hospice without skipping a beat. There's probably more variety in the nursing career than any other occupation. I've been a registered nurse for 35 years and still love it

Nursing--a great choice

Someone will give you a chance to get experience, I promise! I've been an RN for 18 years and my advice to those of you in school, go to work as a tech in a hospital. Not only will you gain valuable experience in working with patients and gain critical thinking skills, they tend to hire you when you get your degree! There are wonderful opportunities in nursing--and there are so many different areas to work in, you'll never be bored!

sounds great but

What about us adults who dont have anyone to lean on while making these career changes? What about about all the stigma that follows us who were previously in banking? Ignorant employers trash our resumes because they think all banking people were doing bad things or were selling something. Some of us were just pushing paper work and following the rules and we are now black listed because of our prior industry. I agree with Kayla! We need at least one year of prior experience even with the degree and if no one will give you experience how can you get it ?

future careers

On the list is Nursing as one of the careers that is popular. But what people don't tell you ,when you go and apply for a position as a nurse, they want you to have at lease one year experience already. I have friends who came out of a four year college and had trouble finding a job as a nurse.

Third World...Really?

Nikki from CA, did you really just compare the US to a third world country? Maybe you should go live in a real third world country and rethink your comment. You would come back and kiss the ground you didn't appreciate.

Don't Teach

Just make sure no one goes into teaching, terrible layoffs now and new grads have been waiting a year at least to get a job.

u gotta be kiddin

I appraise real estate. it should be on this list, except garbage men make more money. Waiting for another mortgage melt down? Don't worry, it wont be long till we need another bail out. Appraisers are run by the mortgage people, who make money on a closed deal. So a lot of bad deals close, and good appraisers are acient history.

The U.S. is third world now

Half of these jobs are related to health care because many people are poor and/or sick from being out of work, and those professionals are lucky to get minimum wage. All tech jobs are transported overseas, so get real U of Michigan. Your friends are getting minimum wage or work-for-free "jobs." I know because I have a tech background. The rest of the jobs on this list are decided by Washington bureaucrats giving our future tax dollars to their friends' companies. The U.S. is a country of rich (less than 1%) and extremely poor and it's getting worse.

Wrong List

This list is missing out on Software/Computer Engg, I study at the UoM and believe me the students from the CS department here get placed the fastest and with the best wages .
