Best-Kept-Secret Career: Accent-Reduction Specialist

Accent Reduction Training Academy

The Accent Reduction lessons have sparked new interest in this country for the past decade or so. Actually, they have been around long before in countries like Great Britain, ie; Profeessor Higgins, Pygmalion. It is a rather tricky statement to propose to someone that they can lose their accent or eliminate their dialect. It is perhaps, more proper to say that you can improve your accent over time. There are no quick (30 day solutions), and anyone who says so, is simply not being upfront and honest about the complexity of this teaching.

curious

I'm wondering what is the earning potential in this field and is this a field that will taper off at some point or do you think it will continue to be a much needed career??

Thank you for your time

speech-language pathology

I am 65 years old and I am a preschool lead teacher(as my second career). I have in 2007 a bachelor degree in human services concentrating in early childhood development. I would like to go back to school for a master degree in speech-language pathology to help children with communication and language issues. I have a good health and still have very strong mind and body and like to learn. What are your recommendations?

Incorrect

"What you should do, actually, is major in linguistics, and follow on to a masters degree either in Speech Pathology or, if you cannot or do not want to do this degree (its more intensive, but gives you very valuable knowledge), TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

I say major in linguistics because this field is the fundamental theoretical core of the work that accent reductionists/speech pathologists do (sort of like math/physics for engineering). You will be much more qualified and prepared, and look more impressive to graduate schools (in my opinion) if you study Linguistics."

This is incorrect. I am a licensed and credentialed speech-language pathologist. In the state I am in, graduate schools require that you major in Communicative Disorders or Speech-Language Pathology.....if you majored in another field, you will likely have to go back and complete several pre-requisite courses. Graduate school is very, very competitive. There are not many programs in this field, so be prepared for a lot of hard work. The graduate courses themselves are tough and you will be required to complete several hundred hours of clinical time as well as interning at a school and/or hospital. It's not for someone who wants to leisurely pursue another career.

Accent Reduction Instructor Course

I just like to know if there's any course to train instructors to conduct Accent Reduction course. I hold an honors degree in TESL and have been teaching ESL for more than a decade. I find the English sound is so important besides the melody and and the mindset when you speak a certain language. I'd like to really specialize in this area because I know I can really help my learners, I'm from Malaysia by the way & running a language centre here. I've been doing my research but I don't see the organization that does accent reduction offers courses to train instructors. Please let me know if there's any.

To Christi Barb PhD:

Generally an intelligent response, except for the multiple references to upcoming 'regulation' in the accent reduction field. I realize how someone, who has pusued an academic and professional path that has required continuous certifications, could acquire a pavlovian expectation that anything and everything be regulated; but come on! What possible clinical or other justification could anyone in their right mind come up with to regulate such a decidedly non-medical and voluntary self improvement activity such as accent modification? Thats just ridiculous. Think through your expectation about that, as that would be equivelant to regulating acting classes. Thanks

Accent Reduction Specialist

Hello!

I am fascinated by this newly-discovered career opportunity! I have been teaching ESL in the public schools for 21 years, and since No Child Left Behind, am experiencing less opportunity to enhance children's thinking and an almost oppressive environment in education. I'm certified TESOL, with a Master's in Bilingual and ESL. I would love to pursue the ACCENT REDUCTION SPECIALIST career!

Where would/could I begin?
