Best Careers 2009: Physical Therapist

You Are all wrong

I am a therapist with a 3 yr Doctorate degree. There are many tuition reimbursement plans. I worked for a company that gave me 30k just towards my college loans and I started out making 63k on top of the 30k, and a 10k sign on bonus just for taking the job. Most therapy jobs offer sign on bonuses, and other perks. Depending on what area of therapy you go in to dictates salary. home Health and nursing home jobs pay more becuase they are less desirable. Starting salarly usually at least 60 and with experience 90. Sports rehab starting is less more like 45 avg but depending on the area of the country it is more or less. You can also work part time or as an as needed therapist making 45-60$ an hr and you pick when and how much you want to work. All of this for a low stress work environment and having a personal life- no weekends, no on call. Its great once you finish your schooling

perhaps

but physicians work at least double the hours of a PT, and it is generally a more stressful occupation (unless you luck out and can get a dermatology residency). You also have to see a much higher volume of patients as a physician. There is a reason they get paid more and those are probably it.

Pete

65k is a good median. When you look at the type of classes, time required in school, and the total cost of education 65k starts looking like a lot less. Prerequisite classes are in line with med school. Training is vigorous and takes up most your time. Medicare cuts are looking to decrease salary further. 100k+ in student loans takes a while to pay off. It's not all that much more difficult to go to med school. A couple more years in school and you double your annual salary. Meanwhile you're not increasing your student loan debt by as much as you'd think. There are all types of tuition reimbursement plans for physicians. This is not the case for Physical Therapists.

say what?

@ the person who said 65,000 is not adequate earnings after three years of grad school- in general i tend to agree with you but that is a very comfortable salary to live off of almost anywhere in the country. i personally have been looking at going to grad school to be a dietician which is also 3 years (2 years classroom and 1 year as an intern) and the pay coming out is around 40,000, so if you really want to balk at diminishing returns on ones education and knowledge PT is nothing to complain about!

What does graduating from law school have to do with anything? I get it, you just got to toot your horn a bit. We get it, you're a freaking stud already.

Humane and Morally Rewarding

I been practicing the profession close to 20 years and I cherished every single day. When I am down and bit stressed, just to looked at my patients face when they smile and appreciate all the effort you are doing , by making their life better, a day at a time relieves all the negativity. Graduating from law school this year, while working as PT is such a great combination. Stressed and too much pressure to pass the bar is balanced by good feelings and delight at work. I cannot think of a better way to relieved my stress than to go work and treat my patients. The pay is excellent and the schedule is flexible. The profession is morally rewarding and makes me more humane.
