THANK YOU!!

I really appreciate your advice. I just started looking into Aveda as well. I'm still worried that my age will be a negative factor, but I guess I'll have to wait and see. Thank you again.

To Liz

Liz, I think you have a much higher chance if you attend Vidal Sasson or Paul Mitchell. I think they both are very qualified in teaching new and upcoming technique. It is more money upfront but will really help you in the long run!

Considering this career

I'm considering a career change and very interested in hairdressing. However, I'm 30 years old now and wondering if I'm too old to really make it... ? Also, do I have a better chance at a higher end salon if I attend a private school like Paul Mitchell or Vidal Sassoon or will any JC do? I live in LA and feel a little overwhelmed with options. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!

Love the job, but not sure if it's a Career for me.

I've been a hair stylist for about 2 years now. I love cutting and coloring hair, and it's nice to know that I'll always have a job because people are always going to need a haircut. Unfortunatly, unless you've been at it for a few years, you don't make much money. You can't go into it expecting to make tons of money, it takes work and time to build a clientel. Benifits are lacking aswell. I myself am thinking of going back to school for something that i enjoy doing but can give me better benefits, and won't require standing fr 10 or more hours a day. I'll probablly still cut hair part time though because it's fun to do.

GREAT CAREER

I have been in this field of work for nearly 15 years now...and have not been disappointed with my career choice. Working every bit of that time at high-end salons, my first year was the only one as low as the median income stated here....and that was 1995....and minus the tips...which can be quite hefty at christmastime. But the greatest part has been the relationships I have made...primarily with the clientele,...that have filled my life with laughter and love and experiences I would not have had otherwise. So, to any aspiring stylists out there, I would encourage you to not be led astray by those who might tell you that there is no earning potential here. It's all about you as an idividual artist and as a people-person....and positioning yourself in a salon that can meet your income needs. Good Luck!

From Cutey To Beauty!

I have been in school now for 4 months with another 14 to go, and I can't believe how much it's changed my life! I cannot wait to get out in the industry and really start making my mark. I'm the top of my class and the only "newbie" with request clients already! I feel amazing about myself and my future when I'm doing hair and that's something I never thought could happen! Anyone even thinking about doing hair should take a visit to their local school for a simple shampoo and style to get a feel from the students and see how great it can be!

NO MORE FOR ME! I've been a successful hairstylist for 25 years (23 yrs owning my own salon) and I'm back to school. Sure, you can basically set your own hours, but I have had it with the demanding, same people week after week after week! It wears on you - BELIEVE ME! No benefits, is another reason for me to throw in the towel. I could not see me retiring doing hair. I am obtaining my 4 year in hopes to teach or advise at the juinor college level. I have tried teaching at beauty schools, but they are a joke - all out for the $$$, not education. Sure, the beauty world was a great way to raise my sons. It gave me the flexibility to attend their school functions, but I'm past all that and ready to move on!

Hair stylist

I have changed careers about 7 years ago from health to hair stylist . I have enjoyed it and plan on staying in the the field. I don't make a whole lot but make enogh the tips are great from regulars and ok from others if they rember to.It is long hours but you get to sat your own when the slow times ccome around but every acomadating when in peak season . the smell of of colur and perms mean money and you should always wear gloves when working with chemicels. I really enjoy my career choise!
