Re: "Fun"

I noticed you said you work as a "design technician" for a manufacturing company, I was wondering if you could give a few more details on what that is? I like the idea of a mobile job but don't know exactly what yours entails or how the market is for it right now. Any information would be helpful, whatever you are willing to give :).

Fun

I work as a hair technician for a local manufacturer and travel all over East Africa to showcase our lattest creations. Its Fun and less tiring than the usual salon floor. However, I bet stylists get tips more than any other career. But worst bit is when one grows much older, clients become more sensitive and soon throw you out of the market for fresh blood.

commision!

right now i am working for a corporation as a hairstylist, how ever i fond that they take too much money from my work. ( i get 40% and they get 60%) one day i make about 200 bucks but i just gets 80 bucks and i have to pay tax and everything. if i want to have health insurance, i have to pay; but pay with a lot of money. I dont think i keep being a hairstylist for a long time! Right now i just need some money to pay for my bills. later when the economy will be good again, i will find something to do and i am going do hair for the weekends i think.

Hoe much you get paid depends on if you work in a salon, a day spa, or a place such as great clips. It also varies by what area of the country you live in and if you work in a small or big city. Wether you rent a booth or get paid by commision. BUT the most improtant factor is how hard you work. And this just dosnt include at work. You have to market yourself and your products and always keep your looks up. As far as schooling goes it depends on where you go. Most places only take a year or a little more to get your cosmotology diploma but you have to then take your state boards for your license. You can attend a Technical College or a beauty school, just make sure its ligitimate. After you obtain your license however, you have to attend classes and trade shows and keep your stlying and techniques up to date.

hope this helps!

cosmetology

hey whats up im in high school right now and i looove doing exotic hair styles and glamour make up :) i have a few questions for the pros: how much per year do you get paid? how many years of college do you need?

Kayla of OH @ Sep 29, 2009 13:18:49 PM

Hairstyling is not all glamour

I love the creative aspect of hairstyling but after being in the field for many years I realized there are many downsides to the business. Hairstyling is not what it used to be. There is now salons in every corner some charging as low as $10 for a hair cut it's made it very difficult for many stylist to earn a decent income. You are expected to work long hour on your feet all day and sacrifice weekends. Yes, earning a commission and tips are good but most salons do not offer any sick days, vacation days, or health benefits even after you've worked at the salon for 10 years or more. So before deciding on a career as a hairstylist I would consider if you are truly passionate about it and if you are willing to work very hard to earn a living.

OhMaGosh

I am a Cosmetology Instructor in CA. I have been a Cosmetologist for 21 years.

Here's the truth of it...

You must create your own buzz, and your own destiny. No one is going to hand it to you...

If your school does not teach business fundamentals then you will NEED to go and get it... It may cost you a bit more, but without it you will be flailing around wondering why you're not getting anywhere. It takes 3-5 years to create a clientele without any business knowledge. With Business Fundamentals it takes 6 mon to 1 year... That's how important it is.

We're not talking about how to answer a phone or create flyers... It's a systematic approach to tracking your daily services and creating a client culture so you do not have to compete with your co-worker for the next walk-in client.

Yes it's true you can set your hours in a booth rental salon... but you will be setting them around your clients, not around your family and social life.

The main complaint about hairstylists today is that they choose family and social life over their career, and have no sense of responsibility... This is going to sound mean, but if you choose your children and home over your career, and you would leave in a moments notice because your child is sick or has no babysitting? You will not be very successful.

You must actually plan that kind of thing for someone else to deal with in order to be successful. You can not choose your home and expect your boss or your clients to understand. They don't want to hear it, and you should plan for the worst to ensure you can keep going even if your child is sick or YOU get sick.

It's about prudent planning, not letting your family "suffer"... This is true of all businesses... One time does not mean you'll be fired or lose all your clients... but don't let it become a pattern.

Good Luck to you ALL!
