owner

I have been in Salon business since 1978 started as a Stylist opened my own salon in 1983. 26 years and 4 Salons later i have several stylists who had been with our company for over 18 years had gone through BA and Masters degree, had gone through couple of marriages etc and they all are making over $100,000.00 on W-2 which doesn't include tips. So yes this might be a small percentage of industry but if you put yourself to a great school and work your way up in upscale salon with good standing it is a very good career.

Re: "Fun"

I noticed you said you work as a "design technician" for a manufacturing company, I was wondering if you could give a few more details on what that is? I like the idea of a mobile job but don't know exactly what yours entails or how the market is for it right now. Any information would be helpful, whatever you are willing to give :).

Fun

I work as a hair technician for a local manufacturer and travel all over East Africa to showcase our lattest creations. Its Fun and less tiring than the usual salon floor. However, I bet stylists get tips more than any other career. But worst bit is when one grows much older, clients become more sensitive and soon throw you out of the market for fresh blood.

commision!

right now i am working for a corporation as a hairstylist, how ever i fond that they take too much money from my work. ( i get 40% and they get 60%) one day i make about 200 bucks but i just gets 80 bucks and i have to pay tax and everything. if i want to have health insurance, i have to pay; but pay with a lot of money. I dont think i keep being a hairstylist for a long time! Right now i just need some money to pay for my bills. later when the economy will be good again, i will find something to do and i am going do hair for the weekends i think.

ANSEWER

Hoe much you get paid depends on if you work in a salon, a day spa, or a place such as great clips. It also varies by what area of the country you live in and if you work in a small or big city. Wether you rent a booth or get paid by commision. BUT the most improtant factor is how hard you work. And this just dosnt include at work. You have to market yourself and your products and always keep your looks up. As far as schooling goes it depends on where you go. Most places only take a year or a little more to get your cosmotology diploma but you have to then take your state boards for your license. You can attend a Technical College or a beauty school, just make sure its ligitimate. After you obtain your license however, you have to attend classes and trade shows and keep your stlying and techniques up to date.

hope this helps!

pros and cons

well first u make lot of money just being a regular hairstylist but if u are thinking bigger u can be millionaire, with the the time it gets boring and frustrated just doing the regular cuts but anyways if u really really luv it you can do it

sara of NM @ Oct 01, 2009 21:53:28 PM

Work and Hair

I work partime as a hair stylist on the weekends, I have a fulltime job during the week. I love doing hair but will not work fulltime in a salon you dont get vacations, siock days or benefits, If you wana do hair thats awesome just have a back up plan jsut in case...
