beg to differ

I'm also prolife, as a genetic couselor you can offer the family the OPTIONS for their new baby--just because they're going to have a different child, it doesn't mean they can't have a successful life-- often times, having a special child is MUCH more rewarding then having a "normal" child!

Pro-life concerns

I am thinking about a career in genetic counseling, but I am pro-life unless the mothers life is endangered by the pregnancy. Could I still be a successful counselor without supporting abortion?

I would like to be a genetic counselor

I am currently an undergraduate in Integrative biology and Scandinavian studies. I would really like to become a Genetic Counselor but worry about the available opportunities to get into a program. I thought there were only 30 programs in the US with only 10 students per year accepted! Is this true. Will my dream career never come from not being able to get into a program?

Genetic Counseling

I think Genetic Counseling is a wonderful career, if the person does not have money in mind. it is in many ways a satisfying job where we are able to help challenged individuals and families where a diorder has been prominent and also help couples make the right n the best choise.

Concidering the amount of work and education that goes into the course, the pay scale definitely needs to be revised.

Genetic Counseling Basics

Correct, there is no Ph.D. in this field. MS is the highest you go (terminal degree). Also, there is no need to be pro-choice. I have known several GCs who were not pro-choice and did just fine. Yes, about half of genetic counselors work in a prenatal field, but there are many who never even see a pregnant couple, much less discuss termination options. Also, a GC might choose to work at a hospital where termination is not performed, such as a Catholic hospital, in which case the issue may only come up peripherally and the GC would not need to be directly involved in making arrangements. Genetic counseling is about allowing the patient to make the best decision for them, not for the GC to tell them what to do, so GCs tend to be very accepting of other opinions and political stances. If you can't stand it when someone does something you would NEVER consider doing, don't go into genetic counseling.
