Using Facebook to Fire Up Your Career

Agreement...

I agree with "ofCA," it takes a while to form a network and most people don't have extensive ones at that. Also, do you really want an entire network of people knowing what you're doing for your career?

However, the last paragraph never placing any information on the web that isn't OK for the world is great advice. Our emails and IMs are not secure. We may not all be tech geniuses, but you can bet that we if wanted to become so, the information is at our fingertips.

LinkedIn is great

've received several projects and even more proposals just by having a LinkedIn profile and lots of real connections with people I've worked with. I'm a Brand Strategist with significant experience in New Products, Positioning, M&A, and Sustainability Marketing.

Here's my LinkedIn profile:

well...

"And I just did a Twitter asking: Has anyone been busted in something that was seemingly trivial but embarrassing via Twitter or Facebook or whatever? I got all these fascinating stories from people that I worked into the column."

That's a lot easier said than done, unless you're one of those folks that's already established and has a network. For most everyone else, it's not that simple.

You can't be serious...

I don't get it. I thought Facebook is a "social" network where I post pictures of me and my friends partying. Why would I want a potential employer to see that?

Facebook

Great post...Sarah's work is always readable! Having her portrait on display as you read the article is also good for aesthetics! As for facebook, recently I have started moving a few Corporate clients to setting up Facebook accounts to promote their business (dependent upon the industry etc). Effectively, they are discovering a whole heap of benefits - one of which is recruitment! FB will present them with marketing, research and RECRUITMENT opportunities that they have never been exposed to before...so happy days!

I searched for a job via Facebook and while I didn't get my current job through Facebook, I made some great connections.
