Diane's reponse was great - but let me add one thing.
Once you get the interview keep this in mind. An older worker has to come across as someone with a decent memory and the key to a good memory is exercise. Stress kills brain cells, exercise relieves stress protecting the brain and your ability to communicate. If you keep forgetting words or get lost in the sentence then the interviewer will think you are too old. So do the swimming, jogging, or weight lifting you need to do to stay fit. If you are fit you will sound more confident and you will have more verbal command. And your cyrstalized knowledge you gained over the years will hold you in good stead.

Some decent suggestions here. I only go back to 1982 on my resume and everyone assumes that was my first job out of school. Therefore if I got my first job in 1982 at 19 years old, they can assume I'm in my mid forties. And it's a shame that employers want the experience but are so darn cheap that they hire people with half the experience just to save money. Another factor for someone like me is I'm single and trying to survive on one income. A lot of people have spouses and extra income so they can take jobs that don't pay them what they are worth. To me, it's insulting, and being in Corporate America for as many years as I have, I've seen the huge decline in ethics, loyalty and decency. It's always about huge dollars for the peole on top who would be nowhere without the people like me doing the job and making them look good.
