Washington is number 1? You have no idea what you're talking about. Your value per hour input is nonsense. This state does not have income tax HOWEVER it DOES have a B&O tax, which is in fact RISING and going to rise further to support the liberal tax and spend economy that's put this state 8 billion in debt. I came to your site looking for decent rankings so I can MOVE my business from this state to another. Thanks for putting Washington as 'number one!' so it spared my reading the rest of your incorrect rankings.

Comments on starting a business WHERE

This question about where to start a business is a tad off mark as most people cannot just get up and run to another state to start a new business venture. The real question is what is the best business to engage in where I live. Each state and each city has saturation points on creating and maintaining business. In NYC there are maybe more than 10,000 restaurants which change hands, turn over names and float with the traffic. With population comes sometimes great traffic. In smaller cities the issues of parking, real traffic, real customers and competition analysis is very important. As a trainer of business brokers, I would state that you have a greater chance of success in taking over an existing business than starting a new one in many business sectors. Find these great opportunities can be done by finding the right business broker. It is a skill all in itself and I can help you. People who learn the science and art of listing and representing business for sale situations from me learn that the packaged deal, clearly profiled and presented is what people interested in self employment need. If you need to find a business broker or would like to consider a career as a business broker contact me, go to www.bebizbroker.com

Where is the best state to start a business? The internet has changed the playing field. The right business opportunity can be anywhere, I also suggest that you look at www.businessopportunity.com to see different business opportunities.

Best Places To Start a Business

The above mentioned states are truly great places to start a business. What's great in this day and age, if you plan to start an online business, many more locations become available as long as they have a good, reliable internet connection.

Devin,

Your small business claims are way off. Take a look at the links below, and here's a quote:

"Small business drives the American economy," said Dr. Chad Moutray, Chief Economist for the Office of Advocacy in a press release.

I agree that some businesses need skilled people who are found in places like CA, but many do not. You also ignore the fact that people can move! Small businesses are abandoning states with ridiculous tax levels like CA and NY and are taking their employees, customers, and economic contribution with them

Funny thing...

I don't know what the criteria are for this survey (though I can take some guesses), but I do find it odd that the states with the most new business success stories don't make this list. For instance, California & Massachusetts (b/c of Silicon Valley & Boston) have more venture capital investment between the two of them than all other 48 states combined. States like Texas may be great for Mom & Pop operations that need cheap, low-skilled labor, but for the businesses that really matter in America, the high-tech game changers that keep us near the front of the global economy, you need highly skilled workers (like the ones coming out of top universities in Cali & Boston), investors with deep pockets & some patience, and a high-tech infrastructure that just can't be provided by states like Texas & Nevada that try to compete solely on cost without considering value.

And don't get me wrong, I think it's unfortunate that small mom & pop operations (like the one I run, for example) don't matter in America, but the reality is they don't. The US is near the bottom of developed nations in terms of employment by small businesses. Despite the feel-good statements politicians make about small businesses to get votes, the reality is small businesses make up a tiny fraction of the American economy. The only small businesses that really matter are the ones that will become big businesses within a short time frame, because big business is what runs the American economy (and the American political system, for that matter).
