As I read the comments I have to agree and disagree. I am a strength and conditioning specialist and I will be the first to tell you that you have to have a certification for the line of field you are in (from a reputable source) but it is far from what makes a good coach!
If you talk to any of the top strength and conditioning coaches you will find out that it is what they do before and after they get the certification that matters: continuing education through books, dvd's/cd's, seminars/conferences, attending other top coaches facilities clinincs and learning from them and being in the trenches and applying what you have learned.
I know many people with a BS or even MS and a cert that are 10 years behind with training methodologies and concepts and have no clue what on what works. The honest truth is that is when you get the certification and degree is when things really beging.
Finding out whether the coach is right or not takes sitting down and talking to them, observing how they train clients and possibly getting information from current or previous clients of theirs. Frauds, pretenders and "coaches" that do not care, have passion and knowledge will reveal themselves soon through the actions that they make as will the great coaches out there.
Do not just judge by the letters behind the name.

athletic training vs sport training
I hear the comments about the degree in the athletic training area. I am all for education but I strongly feel that the trainer should also be athletic him or her self. I am a certified fitness trainer but I have a masters in social work. My talent is training and I am damned good at it! What I lack in book sense of some areas, my experience in the trenches more than makes up for it! I am a 39yr old running 6:20 miles and 4.7 40yard time, at 6 feet and 205 pounds. At the age of 20 I couldn't have never dreamed of this. I have overcome every injury and have learned how avoid them all together. I feel no different than a coach coaching my children who have never played the sport! I have a professional football player as a client and I do off season speed training with him. They checked out my work ethic and decided to give me a chance, and the rest is history. I hope parents look also at the athletic background of the trainer they have choosen because some things are not in the books but in experience of the sport!!!!!!! Remember the old FEMA director had a degree?
