Unemployment Extension Clears Senate

By Liz Wolgemuth

To the great relief of many job seekers, the Senate Wednesday evening passed a bill providing for extended unemployment benefits. The bill passed 98-0, the AP is reporting. Because the Senate did not vote on the original House bill, but on an expanded version, the House will have to agree to the changes as well. However, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said earlier this week that the House would take up the legislation right away.

The Senate bill provides additional weeks of benefits for eligible workers in all states, expanding on the House bill's provision for additional benefits in only those states with higher unemployment rates.

The delays in passage of the extension have been a frustrating experience for many Americans facing a still-bleak job market. Roughly 7,000 workers lose their benefits daily, according to an estimate by the National Employment Law Project.

Indeed, Senate Democrats have been tracking online the number of benefit exhaustions since the bill was first delayed. The number was nearing 195,000 when the Senate voted Wednesday evening.

On Friday, the Labor Department will release the October jobs report, and economists are expecting employers to have slashed another 175,000 jobs.

Jobs

I've been unemployed for over a year now drawing my unemployment first then went on the emergency unemployment. I've been looking but there are no jobs and if one comes available there are so many applying that I have had no luck. But with it being 2010 and time for the Census there are a number of jobs available. These jobs are temporary and you can work up to 40 hours a week, alot better than unemployment. A test is required and they put you on a list according to your test score and if they need you they call. From what I understand they will be hiring everyone on the list no matter what your score is. Theres 28 questions so to get at the top of the list you need to make 28 but you can make 1 and still be on the list. But at the bottom. There will be 4 phases and if you get hired for the first you have a chance to work all phases because you will be trained and have experience. So go for it. They also pay for milage. Different areas have different pay rates so check it out what do you have to lose. Your unemployment your gonna lose it eventually anyway. And when your laid off from the census go back to the unemployment.

I am confused

I don't understand, I thought that the extended unemplyment went thru the end of 2010. I read on the Ohio unemployment site that it only extends unemployment trhu Feb of 2010. This means when my Unemployment runs out in the second week of march (this is not any of the extended benefits this is my main filing) that I will not be eligable to receive any part of the extension's? Can someone help me understand i I am correct.
