Postsecondary teachers are not high school or middle school teachers. Postsecondary means that they teach in a Community College or College/University.

There have been lay-offs and hiring freezes in the elementary and secondary public education sectors. Try private and charter schools many of which are still hiring. Or just substitute to wait out the bad economy and get your foot in the door.

Working in Health Care

I keep seeing that most job security sites speak of jobs in health care. What is not said is it takes years of school and on site training at low or no pay to be trained. There are jobs in health care because any training in the medical field is hard and most people can't or do not want to go through it. If it was easy we would not be so short of staff. Also sites say there are demands for doctors, gee, can I be a doctor next week, not the 10 to 15 years of school it takes to become one.

There are thousands of new teachers every year graduating from schools and this year there are no place to put them. This recession has hit hard. In the NC area thousandsof teachers are displaced with nowhere to go. Who would have thought that they would layoff teachers. NOT ME!!! Time for a new career....

Nursing

Nursing isn't for everyone. Im a respiratory therapist and my mom is a nurse. Nursing provides a lot of opportunities and advancement everywhere. It takes a strong passionate person to be a nurse. If this sounds like you then youll do great in nursing. If you're in it for ONLY the money then I would not recommend this job for you.

Nursing

I too have been a nurse for 26 years. It is an incredible job. Through the years I have worked in several areas; ICU, ER, Critical Care Transport, Ob-Gyn Nurse Practitioner, Conscious Sedation Nurse,and my nurse focus Forensic Nurse Examiner specializing in Sexual Assaults. Thank goodness for all the choices in Nursing or I would have been bored. I enjoy learning and doing new things and Nursing has allowed me many options. Its not like medicine that once you choose a specialty its difficult to change. Many positions in Nursing offer on the job training to get you up to speed in your new job. The other wonderful aspect of nursing is the variety of schedules. When I first started out I worked through a registry working three double shifts(16 hrs) a week in Critical Care Units. I went to numerous hospitals and learned so many ways of doing things. I was able to work those long shifts because I was not married or had kids yet. Then when the kids arrived and we couldn't afford childcare, I worked three 12 hours/ week two of which were on the weekends when my husband was home to take care of the kids. We only needed childcare one day a week. As a NP I worked office hours but planned it so I could drop the kids off and get off in time to pick them up. I did take 5 years off but was EASILY able to get a job once again in a brand new area when I decided to go back. They trained me and I got back up to speed in no time. I now work 3 10 hours/ week and do not work weekends or holidays.

I can work the longer days because the kids are older. This has been an amazing journey in a profession I love as much as I did when I started!

Nursing

Nursing is an excellent career, don't let one bad apple make you think otherwise. Unfortunatly disrespect in the workplace comes in all kinds of shapes and forms the medical field is not alone. I have been a working nurse for twenty five years and have never felt what this particular person speaks of. Certainly in this economy each facility has tough admnistrative decisions to make, but hey a frozen pension is better then no pention at all and you have a job much unlike many other people these days. Nursing is a career that is rewarding, flexable and with it comes a feeling of job satisfaction and security, how many other fields can you say that about? Advancement in the medical field is ongoing with hundreds of options for nurses to better improve their skills or work into management verses a clinical career. Opportunities are endless regarding job advanment i.e. climbing the latter in the medical field. This country needs good people in the medical field and I think it's a terrific choice for new grads today. Beth seems to have a chip on her shoulder, she needs to take a reality check and look around at big business when claimimg the health field doesn't take care of it's own, not true!!

I would not advise anyone to go into this career. Nurses have been held down for years. Disrespect from hospital administrators occurs, not always outright. Actions speak louded than words... had my pension frozen. Health care does not take care of their own. Poor exampes occur everyday.
